A better steward of the food I am given

Good morning MFP pals!

This morning as I was cleaning some strawberries, and checking the bread to see which one was the oldest, and I realized I am a better steward of the bounty I am given.

I used to throw away fruit, veggies, meats, bread, crackers everyday, all due to not being used in time.

I didnt mean to, just would forget about the avacado on the table until it made it's own guacamole.

Now I find myself looking through the fridge each day, deciding what has to be eaten before it goes bad.

I think it has a lot to do with my new relationship with food. Used to be I ate what I 'felt' like eating, eating for taste. Now I need to fuel my body so I put much more thought into it.

Funny, even if I dont feel like eating yogurt and strawberries, once they hit my mouth it sings!

Do you find yourself being a better steward of the bounty that is provided for you?

Yes! I was buying fruits and veggies fresh and throwing most of them away - after all an apple or a handful of chips?!??!?!? BUT as you are thinking chips have no value and boost the calories way up so now I buy the sliced apples and none are wasting. Just one example but it kinda makes you proud doesn't it?!?!?!

No, I'm still in that rut. I have a pantry full of food, but can never find anything to eat. I make food and eventually end up tossing it. The only things that really gets consumed before they go "bad" are the eggs, bacon, cheese, bread, diet soda, wine, and the whiskey :noway:  . And I wonder why I'm not losing....:grumble:

I've noticed the same thing! If you look in my fridge/pantry - it seems kind of bare (compared to a few years ago when it was crammed with chips, crackers, etc.) and all the food we have are fruits/veggies (can't buy too much at one time), beans, rice, non-fat greek yogurt, etc.

Now I plan out the week (with some flexibility) and really enjoy "communing" with my food  I've started making my own whole wheat bread instead of buying. I just bought some masa (corn meal flour) so I can make my own tortillas. Yesterday I made split pea soup in the crockpot for the first time - it's theraputic and almost meditative to prepare our food now.

LOL I actually made a soup the other day because the bacon was getting ready to go bad. My DH is so happy with yummy food. As long as I throw in a steak now and then.
