washing water filter bottle

ok so i know the importance of keeping my water bottle clean, but i've hit upon a snag. My water bottle has a removable water filter in it which is good for 500 litres now obviously i'm washing the water bottle but how do i ensure there are no nasties developing in the filter? i normally use a steralising fluid (such as milton) to soak the bottle in over night that way i know its nice and clean including the "straw" but would putting the filter in as well cause it any damage? what does everybody else do?
