I went home to my parents for vacation. Mom is turning 80 and dad 82 but they still get up and cook early breakfast with nice dishes and make big breakfasts with pancakes, bacon, sausage, fresh fruit and coffee. I said to myself I would limit what I ate on this visit but did not. We ate 3 big meals each day and I always broke down and tried everything. It was great. But when I got home I felt awful about my weight but loved the visit. I decided for my health I have to stick with eating healthy and exercising daily or I will shorten my life I mean really limit. So I am logging agian, everyday excersise and hopefully take the 30 lbs off I have put on the last 8 years. So I plan to do this so I don't need to go on medication someday or have some illness due to obesity. Anyone else use health and disease prevention to motivate them from overeating??? By the way dad is active everyday building things in his workshop and mom paints and they eat but not a lot so there is the secret to good living in eating food but keeping your mind and body active? I sure hope so

Portion control is the key. You can eat just about anything you want to, but maybe not as much of it or as often as you would like.
Any time I am tempted to cut back on my Activity/Exercise I think about my Mother and my Clients (i do Home Health Care) who are basically Homebound because they have chosen to be inactive, or to continue to make poor choices related to nutrition.
It may not be 'Easy' but it is better than being homebound and having others take care of my personnal needs if I have any choice about it.0 -
I am 51 years old, I will be 52 in August and good health is one of my motivators...0

I have had high blood sugar results in the past. I am watching what I eat because diabetes runs in the family.0

Absolutely! I had borderline high cholesterol and was told I could probably manage it myself but keep monitoring it. I also had high blood pressure and was put on a diuretic, which helped. There is also diabetes in my family. So far, all my glucose tests came back great, I have to get my cholesterol re checked, but as for my blood pressure....I haven't been on the diuretic since October and it is back to normal! I'm working to feel good, emotionally, mentally AND especially physically0

Congratulations on making the decision to become healthier and live a longer life. I have dieted all my adult life and never had the motivation to stick to it for long... I'd give up and gain back what I had lost and more....
That is until one particular visit to my parents house. You see we are all heavy in my family, but healthy... so I didn't have any unhealthy genes, I thought. I thought I would live a long life regardless of my weight. Then during a visit, I discovered my parents suffered from health issues but they had kept their health issues to themselves for years. They both took blood pressure meds, cholesterol meds and my dad was checking his bood sugar after each meal! I couldn't beleive it!
Nobody has a free pass. I realized then I needed to make changes in my life. I just didn't realize that I would actually enjoy the changes I was making. On other diets I just wanted to skip to the end and "be there". While chatting with folks who have a good outlook on life, I have learned to be happy along each step of the way, not to let it escape, or to wish the days past, but rather to enjoy each day and be thankful for it. It's truly been a joy to chat with my MFP friends, rely on their support and know that I'm not alone. I could not have come this far without MFP. I wish you well and know that if you really want to change, nothing will get in your way. Keep focused on the forest and don't let the trees get in your way.0 -
I use health, looking good, feeling confident as my motivators. I was classified as obese when I wasn't even a teenager. And now I am 2 lbs or so away from my ""Healthy"" weight. The lowest I've ever weighed was 127 ( But i decided that 130 was more of my weight so I gained 3 pounds and maintained) when I was a freshmen in college, I went up to 147!!!!! YIKES!! THat Freshman-15 really did it to me! I lost 9 pounds of that F-15! I'm still working on losing those 6 lbs and more!
Oh, and by the way, it's epiphany!0 -
I was diagnosed with Type II diabetes about 5 years ago, but didn’t take it seriously until about three months ago when my doctor threatened me with having to inject insulin. The Bride and I took a series of cooking classes which stressed fresh organic food. We started buying all our fruits and veggies at the Farmers Market and joined a Community Sustained Agricultural Organic Certified farm and were amazed at the taste of fresh food. I have stopped buying packaged/processed foods. After doing this for three months, I have been taken off one of my blood pressure meds and two of my diabetes meds. Five days ago, I ended up in the hospital for two days with Atrial fibrillation, and they put me on an 1800 calorie, low sodium diet, which is why I started on MFP yesterday. My goal is to lose 86 more pounds (5’10”, 268 lbs, down from 332 lbs) and get completely off the meds. I can see the results after only a few months.0
