Is it okay to take: Calcium, magnesium & zinc, cinnamon, fish oil, cayenne fruit, one a day women's active metabolism, b complex with vitamin c, b with 12 complex drops, chromax plus, green tea plus hoodia and an iron supplement daily??? I think I have a problem. Is that too many to be taking?

probably more than you need, but as long as you are not taking to much fat soluble vitamins you should be okay ,
doubt you need all the b's you are taking but the extra will just pass in pee

I take a one-a-day womens' multi...if you are taking one of those and eating a balanced diet I don't see why you would need an extra, separate B, C, calcium, magnesium or zinc vitamin....not too familiar with the other things you're taking so I can't help there...but it does seem like a lot of stuff you're putting in your body that maybe you could get from foods? unless you have medical conditions that require extra amounts of those vitamins and minerals.

most "extra" vitamins will be excreted or flushed out of your system, but there may be some substances that are toxic if you take too much...you might want to check with your doctor about why all of this is necessary, if you haven't already :)

Your body is just going to excrete the extra. Once you meet the threshold your body can use for metabolism the rest is just done away with. You are wasting your money.

A , D, E AND K are the fat soluble vitamins , those are the ones you can overdue and become toxic

not 100% sure of the minerals, but belive some can cause problems in high numbers, so becareful, you can probably find 'toxic' level info on the internet

I take a One a Day Women's every day. I'm not sure about the one you're taking, but mine already has 100% of the DV for iron, magnesium, chromium, all of the B vitamins and zinc, so you're really wasting your money taking those extra pills since any extra is going to just be flushed out of your body. It also has 50% of the DV for calcium and with a healthy diet, you can probably forgo that supplement, as well. Besides, we don't absorb the calcium from pills like we do from natural sources.

My husband takes fish oil pills, too, for his cholesterol. I've heard some good things about cinnamon but I'm unsure of what you're hoping to get out of the others (except the green tea with hoodia which I assume is to help raise your metabolism?) so you can continue them if you wish.
  • I think you may be overdoing it. There are few vitamins and minerals that DON'T cause adverse reactions, which are your B vitamins.

It is absolutely NOT true that your body "flushes" them out when its had enough. Your body will try to store it and use what you give it as much as possible. This causes toxicities which may range from simple symptoms such as dizziness and vomiting or something as serious as nerve damage.

Best thing to do is go to your doctor or a registered dietician and have them analyze your diet and blood concentrations.

My advice is never take individual vitamins or minerals, take a multi-vitamin-mineral supplement. Make sure it includes a variety of vitamins and minerals but not in a dosage that exceeds the Tolerable Upper Level. Women need iron and calcium supplements more than anything so make sure to include those in your multi-vitamin.

Another idea is to just try to get as much as you can from your diet. Vitamins and minerals are not as bio-available as the ones from foods. Also, certain vitamins make minerals more or less absorbent. For example, consuming iron from meats or fish while eating a food high in vitamin C makes iron more readily absorbed in the body.

This is a nice little chart of information.

If you're taking a multi-vitamin, you generally don't need to take anything extra, unless you have a medical condition or tendency that would necessitate extra.

For instance, I take a multi-vitamin every day, but I also take an extra iron supplement as well as a potassium, because I tend to be anemic and run low on both iron and potassium when I'm training long-distance running, and noticed that breastfeeding has increased that tendency, so I take both of those to supplement. I also take additional calcium, because breastfeeding saps that, too. I know that I run low on those nutrients, and have found that attempting to get them from my diet is tedious and doesn't always produce good results, so I take the vitamins, and am happy with that.
