Heart Rate Monitor/Calories burned???

I went out and bought a heart rate monitor (since these seem to be important:noway: ) It is a wrist worn version that reads your S-Pulse (measures electical signals on your skin like an EKG machine or electrocardiogram). OK so just sitting here my heart rate is 55, how does a person figure out calories burned from this??:noway: This is either going to be a good investment if I can figure it out or a $50.00 bad investment if I can't. Please help.

Read your instructions to find out if it has a feature that also figures the calories you burn in a certain time period, and how to access that reading.
A lot of these gadgets have bells and whistles that are hard to figure out, and certain models don't have that feature at all. Such as mine; I have to be content knowing that if I stay in a 75% HR zone, i'm burning about 6-7 cals per minute. If you're HR is 55bpm, you're in a 35-45% HR zone, which is a non-fat-burning zone...0 -
Yep, just knowing your heart rate doesn't help much in way of figuring out calories burned. If it doesn't do that for you, then you're still stuck with nothing more than a good guess as to how much you burned.0

If it doesnt tell you calories burned....can you return it?
I did the same darn thing...anyone want a Timex HRM??
I then invested in a Polar F6 and love it . It tracks my cal burned, and has a diary of the past month or so.

Another thing....sorry.
If you have to keep this one here is how I used my old one.
The HRM will tell you if you are in your zone. There are many places on line to look up info on your Target Heart Rate, but here is what I know from the HRM.
220 - your age = max heart rate
example: 220-47= 173
That means when my HR is 173 it is at its maximum it should be beating....I have hit this, but slow down immediately as I dont care to have a heart attack! lol
(moderate) fat burn is 70-79 % which for me is 121-137
(high) cardio zone is 80-90% which for me is 138-154
There is also a low zone which is usually accomplished thru yoga, pilates, and super low impact exercise.
Because you can now monitor how hard you are truly working, you can get a better idea of cals burned form the web site. If you hit 90% for most of your workout, then you know you can select the highest numbers. If you hit 120...then you know it was a lower cals burned work out.

Your heart rate monitor will only tell you calories burned if it has the kcal function... look in your instructions book to see if it tells you anything about that.0

A lot of the wrist ones will tell you calories burned if you start the chronometer (counting up) then have it read your HR. It's when you start the Exercise or chronometer that it starts calculating calories burned. At least, that's how my MIO brand one worked.0

Polar F6 can be purchased at about any sporting goods store. It stores your information in the watch part for a while. I just transfer over what I did for the day into my exercise journal here on MFP. So, I end up with the info a couple of places. I love the Polar F6 and recommend it to everyone!0
