I was at the beach today chasing my 5 year old cousin around, in and out of the water and saw a lot of joggers while i was there. Got me wondering if i changed my walking/running routine to do so at the beach, would it be more beneficial than just around the city? Its a bit out of the way which is why i don't just jump into it but if its worth it, then its worth it.

I was thinking the same thing. I bet it would, because the soft sand gives a lot more, which means you have to push a lot harder to go the same distance.

Besides... you get to check out all the beach hotties that way, anyhow :)

I was wondering the same thing. My local beach is a 5 minute drive away. Just walking in the sand alone was a workout!!

Next time I am at the beach, I'll leave my BodyMedia on and see if theres a good difference. I'm betting it ups it by a good 20%.

Running in sand builds tremendous calf and lower leg strength, and helps strengthen those connective tissues that are missed by just running on asphalt, PLUS it's much easier on the joints. It's almost comparable to running hills.

Not all sand is created equal either (loose v. packed). Obviously loose sand will kick your butt quicker, so don't plan for a long run the first time out. Also, some beaches have an obvious slope to them (as they go into the water), so try not to run on an angle for too long, it's not a good idea, or at least run back the same distance so you've spent equal time leaning left AND leaning right.

I'm sure there have to be more beach runners out there who can make suggestions.
