To start off with getting back in the habit of some kind of workout routine I have decided to start walking every night. I am hoping to work up to running but I also need/want to do some strength training. I have found an arm workout that i am going to try out for beginners but I am having trouble with a lower body, namely my legs. What is some good exercises that I can start out doing to get my leg strength back and start toning them?

Squats and Lunges. They are pretty basic exercises for the lower half.. and google the proper form for them. Once that gets easy, then start adding some weight into it.

At home or at the gym?

At home you can do wall squats in a variety of different ways: 1. Sit against the wall with legs slightly higher than 90 degrees, then drop to 90 degrees, switching positions every 15 seconds. 2. Sit against the wall with legs slightly higher than 90 degrees, then raise one leg (if you can get it above the squating leg, that's the goal). Switch legs every 10-15 seconds.

You can also do a variety of lunges: walking lunges, reverse lunges (standing still and lunging one leg backwards, alternating legs), regular stationary lunges, etc. You can also do squats. Jump squats are really effective and they get your HR up for extra calorie burn (just a normal squat with a jump as you stand up). And calf raises are good too. Do 15 slow calf raises then 10 really fast calf raises, and repeat the set as many times as you can.

    Hope that all helps!

Try doing the 30 day shred, the DVD is under 10 bucks and is only 25 minutes. She does tons of leg and arm stuff. I usually skip the cool down portion and take the dog for a walk afterwards to finish off the work out.
