Unfortunately yes...I've heard they are genetic. I got loads as well. My mom had 4 kids and doesn't have a single stretch mark. An aunt of mine had 7 kids and has 2 that we can see - my aunts and grandma on my dad's side are covered across their belly and thighs and everywhere else.
My brother has plenty as well. Under his arms, lower back, belly.0 -
I do too...I think it's part genetic. Some people just have stetchier skin than others. I've just come to deal with it. Best of luck to you!0

I think it partially is, but most people I know have stretch marks, even men and people who are "skinny". I have them on my hips. I consider them my battle scars and when I finally get all this weight off, I will not be discouraged by them.0

I think its just like achne or chicken skin etc....some of us are more prone to getting them. I also have a lot of them, I have had 4 kids and they got worse with everyone. I look at them as honor badges. I do however have a skin regimen I started a few months ago....loafa...olive oil body wash and lots of vitamin e......:)0

Yes it is.0

hmm not sure if it's genetic. My mom doesn't have any, or my sister, or my dad. I have a lot because I grew a foot in about 6 months and gained/lost weight repeatedly.0

Hehe, my dad had serious acne and my mum had tons of massive stretch marks...so I got both0

i donno. but I have never been overweight-- I was 2 pounds away from being classified as overweight according to BMI, and I have pretty decently bad stretch marks on my sides and thighs.
It makes me sad because I don't know why I got them because I was never really at the size where you would think I would have them, you know?
I guess they aren't like super dark or anything, but I just look at them like battle scars =P0 -
They've gotta be genetic.
I got them as a teen, when I weighed 102 lbs, and was too skinny! They came with my preteen-teen growth spurt/breast and hip development, and had nothing to do with being overweight, since I was underweight until about age 30.
Luckily, they do fade with time. (a lot of time. . . .20+ years!)0 -
i have alot as well. but Mederma is great for them!0

It's not the stretch marks that are genetic...it is prob the skin type that is prone to them that is genetic. You can lighten them, but they're there to stay without surgery dear. Sorry. I too am covered.0

YES! this! I am not crazy! I have stretch marks and was never overweight :P ! Oh well tho.0 -
they do fade after time tho so some good news!!0

Stretch marks are actually "scars" and like any other scar, it's there for life. You can "hide" them with certain creams and now there's even laser surgery to help reduce their size. Also if you have darker skin, stretch marks can tend to show more.0

Same here!0 -
Genetic or not, mine have faded down to barely noticeable along with my weightloss. From and bold, deep red to a white-ish almost skin color. Hardly see them at all anymore!!0

You don't have to have been over weight to have stretch marks. You can get them from growing to tall too fast, or building too much muscle too fast... anything that stretches your skin can cause stretch marks.
But genetics do play a part in the type of skin you have and how resilient it is to suddenly being expected to stretch.0
