Now hubby will have to eat healthier... diverticulitis
Hubby has been in the hospital for a week with severe abdominal cramps. They did the colonoscopy this morning and he's been diagnosed with diverticulitis. Not fun, but manageable. This is on top of the severe blood infection he's also dealing with at the same time.
His diet is awful and part of the reason for this attack. Also not being able to walk a lot ( skin grafts on his feet) and 4 or 5 rounds of mutli week IV antibiotic therapy over the last year... and his digestive system was set for an issue of some kind.
He now gets to learn about a high fiber diet, lots of fresh fruits and veggies and water... and movement for exercise of some kind.Or rather relearn as he keeps being told it over and over. I've got a very strong probiotic waiting for him for when he gets home to help re-balance his intestinal track. However he's back on IV antibiotics for 4-6 weeks again so it will be a long course of probiotics for him.
Since his heart attack in November he's been putting on weight ( I actually weigh about 10lbs less then him now) so this will all work together nicely to get him down 20lbs or so to a healthier weight and finally give him a good healthy diet to give him a better chance at a longer life. The Hospitalist told him the other day that he has to stop taking chances.. he;s 36 and way to young to be this sick with preventable things.
anyone with diverticulitis that can give me some tips to pass on to him?

I have it and its not fun so I feel his pain. I can still eat pretty much what I want. However.......I can't eat nuts, popcorn, fried foods and tomatoes. He needs to keep in mind that anything small like nuts or seeds can get suck in the little pockets that have formed which will get re-infected. He may have attacks from time to time. I have only had 3 for the last 10 years. Only 1 hospital stay. They may tell him he needs to have part of his intestines removed if it keeps happening. Yes it sucks, but its not really a big deal. If you can get him to loose some weight though he will feel alot better. Good luck and if you have any questions about it just let me know!0
