I'm sure the machines at the gym aren't that accurate

    I use a bodybugg
  • You need a heart rate monitor, you can buy online, walmart, sports store, etc

I use a heart rate monitor.
I just got it and have used it twice (very easy to use) and it was way different that my machines....showed that I burned more than what the machines showed. Yay!

I use a heart rate monitor that also calculates calories using my heart rate, current weight and height. I think that is the most accurate.

This is the one I use : http://www.polarusa.com/us-en/products/get_active/fitness_crosstraining/FT4.

This company is great, they even carry a heart rate monitor that can be worn all day to measure total calories burned.

A bodybugg monitors your calories burned every minute of the day as long as you wear it. You wear it on your arm, it's very light weight and I forget I have it on most of the time. It's very accurate and records your ENTIRE day of calories. That way you know exactly how much to eat to keep a deficit.

I went by either the machines at the gym, the estimates on MFP, the estimates on Runkeeper.com, or the HRM that comes with the "game" while using EA Active Sports 2 on the Playstation, and the combination has been accurate enough to reach my goal.

A heart rate monitor's great, but not really necessary. I'd rather spend the money on some new running shoes.

I wear a BodyMedia Fit (same as BodyBugg) and I also wear a HRM during workouts. The HRM (Polar ft7) indicates a MUCH higher calorie burn than the BodyMedia Fit does. I still haven't decided which to trust more.
