Just started karate class this month with my son and husband. we are going three days a week, it's the american tae kwon do version. I've enjoyed it quite a bit, and having the family go has helped keep me motivated. I was worried at first since I am very overweight but after watching several other women who are about my size do it I decided to join. The instructor is very good, very helpful and very patient. lol. Anyone else doing karate and if so how often do you attend? I am considering adding one more day since I have not seen any weight loss on it yet. I have taken my measurements so at the end of the month I'll take them again to see how many inches I've lost. My pants definately feel larger. Now I have to add the exercise bike the rest of the week (it mocks me from the family room).

  • I have been going to Krav Maga classes now for 10 months and I am loving it. I get so much more out of the Krav classes than I ever did going to a gym or to the "Y" to lift weights or workout an any of the cardio machines.

I've been taking Uechi-ryu classes for 7 years. It's an Okinawan style that originated in China. My 2 daughters have gotten their black belts, and the younger one is going for her 2nd degree in December. It gives me some peace of mind that they are more able to defend themselves than most. I usually take 2 classes per week, and help teach one class per week. One important thing to remember is that we all go through cycles. Sometimes you'll go for a few weeks where it seems like you can't do anything right. Then, something will click, and you'll be great. Good luck!

thanks for the advice. last night when i was trying my kicks and not getting it and looked up at those pesky brown belts watching the class I thought to myself - you know what? they were in the same boat a while back that you're in and they're doing great. I'll get there. I really enjoy it.

I trained in TKD for a couple of years a couple of decades ago (and now I feel old...) Loved it. I started it seriously overweight and got seriously in shape...I wish I hadn't had to give it up. I miss the forms (kata, poomse, hyung...depends on what style you're in...) the most. I'd give it a try again if there was anything around here besides Shorin Ryu and MMA...
