Pretty straight forward question. Looking for weights to use at home, especially with Jillian Micheals DVDs.

Any suggestions on where to buy them? Or approximate price?

Craigslist, second hand sports shop, or walmart

I got mine at Walmart. I paid $14 for a set of 5 pound dumbells. I also got my kettle bells at Walmart and paid $20 I think for a 15 pound and $25 for a 25 pound.

For kettle bells, if you haven't done them before I do NOT recommend using Jillian Michael's or Bob Harper as an instructor. They focus a lot on the workouts and assume you know how to use them already. I would recommend someone like Lauren Brooks to actually show you the form. Kettle bells are an AWESOME workout but can be very dangerous to your back, shoulders and neck.

Neither is better than the other, they both serve a purpose on some level depending on what you're doing. If the video calls for Ketel Balls then get those. If not, dumbbells are probably a little more flexible in terms of what you can do. Bowflex and another company makes a very nice all-in-one dumbell with adjustable weight from like 5lbs to 60lbs I think, or maybe more. You get that a bench and a chin-up bar and you everything you basically need to workout at home for basic strength training.
  • dumbells work better with jillian micheals older videos, i guess it depends what ur doing.. also i always love academy sports, walmart and hibbet sports and craigslist is great too.. walmart sells the jillian micheals set which has weights 3 5 and 8 in it and its own little holder for them.. i got that one.. it is great..i do p90x and it is wonderful to have them just the perfect weights for me..

I agree, it's both, not one over the other. They are for different areas & different uses.

And I agree you definitely want to learn how to use either correctly, to prevent injury!

That being said, I have (and use) both

ETA: Forgot the where to get, any department store, athletic store etc.
Plan to pay .49+ per lb at sports stores & almost $1 per lb at other stores, call around your local stores or go in and compare prices.
    The kettleballs will cost more.
Also definitely check garage sales and craigslist! =D Never pay more then .49 per lb on used weights, you might as well buy new if you do
