Adding calories BEFORE the workout?

I'm an instructor, and I don't teach my last class until 7:30 at night. This sometimes messes with me, as I'll burn a lot at the end of the night and end up with a lot of calories left over. Would it be bad to add and average of what I burn, earlier in the day, and then adjust it after class? Just so I have a better idea of what I'm working with?

Definitely. When I was following a more predictable training plan I would add my exercise first thing in the morning, then plan my diet for the day accordingly. I'm a bigger guy, so I can burn upwards of 8-900 calories in a really intense session, so I have to plan ahead.

I don't think so. I do this same thing sometimes. I normally always work out first thing in the morning, but some days I have to wait till the evening, and on those days I'll add what I think I'm going to burn that night, and if I'm way off I just change it. As long as I am honest with myself and log everything, and if I go over sometimes big deal! That's just life.

Yes, I can't think of any reason why not. If you teach a class you would likely have a very good idea of how many calories you are likely to burn. If that doesn't work you could also try logging your days from 5 pm one day till 5 pm the next instead of from sun-up to sun-down. It would work the same for any 24 hr period.

Is the class pretty consistent from night to night? I mean, do you know what you are burning pretty consistently? If yes, then add it in early and eat up! I miss teaching classes - was a great way to make sure I got my workouts in. :D

Yeah, I have a HRM, and I taught this exact class two days ago. I'll put a very conservative number. I've never burned less than 350..so maybe I'll put that. Thanks guys!

Well I do that everyday. I used many calorie calculators (including activity) so I know a general amount of calories I should eat per day. Plus, I normally have my food planned out for the entire day the night before. But I also do burn a pretty predictable amount during my workouts.

I have an average that I burn (my hrm broke and i don't get my new one until this friday so I know my estimates are off), and that's what I put in when I have a late class and am trying to meal plan for the day. I don't like to back load my day with food and I only get my workouts in early on Wednesdays and Saturdays.

Most of the classes I teach are in the morning, however, I always do that with my Tuesday nights bc I have scheduled a 90-minute class and 2-3 hour rehearsal, and I do it on weekend nights when I am performing.

I can have anywhere from 30-60 min downtime during class/rehearsal, depending on students and who needs extra run-thrus during rehearsal so I usually plug in just 150 minutes in advance so I can plan my meals, then if I do more or less, I adjust later. I bring 2 protein bars--1 to eat during the break between class and rehearsal, and 1 to eat on the way home if I go over 150 minutes.

I use a conservative estimate for dancing bc I have only ever worn an HRM for 30 minutes. It's not really practical to keep it on for 3 hours, with the start/stop, etc. Of course I could never wear one for performances.

    blessings.

i do it...i created an exercise called "estimate for later"...it holds the spot of the cals i plan or goal to burn that night when i work out...i try to make it as realistic as possible so i can plan my eating thru out the day better and not have to jam food in at 10pm after my workout.....if you know you are guaranteed to work out it CAN NOT hurt....now if you flake and dont workout and eat the cals you got a problem you'll have to fix :)

ps after i workout i delete the estimate and add the actual to my diary...
