Any brewers?

So I am a fan of beer, all kinds of beer. Figured I have been drinking so much over the years, why not start making it. Was wondering if there are any home brewers out there in the world of MFP and how your lifestyle changes have mixed with your passions for the suds.

I have made beer from prepackaged kits and it is pretty good.
Never have I bought ingredients and tried to create my own.
One thing to note though is that if after buying the fermenting vessels, airlocks, bottles and kits plus shipping it isn`t any cheaper then buying the finished product.
Have also made many gallons of wine from various fruits and berries along with watermelon, that is a little more cost effective as the ingredients can be cheaply (or free if wild).0 -
My boyfriend does home brew...he LOVES it! I don't partake too much because I'm not a beer person, but it is possible to calculate the nutritional information of every beer you make. I will have to ask him.
When i do have some, I just take the size of the glass and type of beer to track it. A lot of the beers you make will most likely turn out to be very hearty, therefore you don't have to chug a bunch of them like a college freshman in order to get drunk! I hope you're not brewing beer just for the buzz though...there's plenty of cheaper ways to get yourself effed up. The expenses of equipment can add up, but it's very worth it because soon you'll never have to buy beer again! Have fun and enjoy!0 -
Just started the home brewing hobby this year. Gave a home brew kit to my husband for Christmas last year. Looking forward to the next batch, when it's not too blasted hot to heat up the kitchen. We just used a kit.....next one will be less of an amber ale, more of a straw colored beer. Yeah, I guess we'll have to limit it to one..... I actually prefer to eat my calories, anyway.0

Well... I do enjoy getting a little tipsy, but I enjoy doing it on good beer. Whether I start with extracts or go into doing it from raw ingredients, I am not sure. I have heard from scratch is actually cost effective, while extracts you are paying about the same. I watched some friends make some beer from scratch and had some once it was ready. Such a tasty porter.... I had to keep telling myself to slow down and enjoy it it was so good. I think with my current beer buying (which usually on sale microbrew,) I haven't really had those taste experiences. I figure being more involved my help that... or I may never enjoy beer again as I will always be too critical of my finished products.0
