Heart Rate Monitor with finger sensor

I've got one that I use my finger on a sensor to check...and I'm messing around with it, and comparing to checking it with myself, and it's off.
I use my index finger, and I'm getting like 50-54bpm at rest....I think that's low....I use my finger and I'm at 60 or so...so it's off from 6-10.
It seems to calculate calories fairly decent. 55 minutes of Tae Bo Advanced burned 385 calories.
Anyone have an experience with these? Obviously a chest strap version would be ideal, but I'm broke for a couple monthsl.
