Am I supossed to eat my calories? OK so my goal is to eat 1200 calories a day, but I work out and burn about 1100 ish calories a day, which means I need to consume about 2300 calories a day. On days like today, out the door at 6:20, drop off Husband at work, daughter at sitter, and in school by 8:30-10:20, then at the Gym from 10:40-2 or 2:30. Home for a very late lunch and to my husbands work by 3:30 to pick him up, then across town to pick up my daughter, then home for about an hour, and back to school for psych from 6-8:45. Come home give daughter a bath, and by that time I'm DONE! Seriously! DONE! I don't even want to think about food by that time.
We don't have a lot of money and especially not enough for me to be grabbing food on the go. I cook all my meals from scratch, I hate boxed anything, I usually grab a high calorie protien bar in the morning, but that might have to stop to because of budget. So what do i do?

hi protein snacks like nuts, jerky, protein shakes, meal replacements. I bought meal replacement powder and it was pretty cheap and lasts a long time, be glad you have that many calories to play around with. And the more protein you eat the more the exercising will be adding muscle to your body. yay!0

I think maybe you need to cut back on the gym a little bit. If you're burning too many calories then your body will be in starvation mode. Two hours is usually my limit at the gym.
So spend less time at the gym! Cutting back is a lot easier than working harder. :flowerforyou:0 -
Hmmm...calorie dense foods maybe...
Really earthly whole grain breads (which you can make)
Nuts, seeds, granola, dried fruits....
I drink some of my calories, makes it so much easier on me. You can do that with smoothies, protein shakes (not my fav), or special "treat" drinks (gourmet hot chocolate, coffees, teas, etc)
A big part of this is finding the time and MAKING the time to eat what you need to.
It's not an easy adjustment, but it will help.
Also, cutting back on gym time...like others mentioned...I had to do that simply so I could live without eating all the time.0 -

Did you set your own goal of 1,200 calories? That seems awfully low for someone our size. Please be careful, sweetie.0 -

I did set my own goal as reccomended by my nutirtionist. When she set that goal a few months back it was when I wasn't working out at all. I'm going to see her sometime this week, but I know 1200 is attainable. With mfp's setting I had to consume about 2600 calories, after the gym.
I don't want to cut back at the gym! I feel sooooooo good! 75% of it is water Aerobics!0 -

Ok, good! It's a good that your have a nutritionist looking after you.
As a poster mentioned earlier, eating a lot of calorie dense foods will help get your calories up there. Try eating full fat salad dressings, nuts, and/or also cooking your food in a little more healthy fats.
Exercise does make you feel good, doesn't it? Whoda ever thunk it??!!! :laugh:0 -

2 hours of Water aerobics!!! 557 calories PER HOUR! YEAH!0 -
It sounds like you are making wonderful progress! Way to go!!
If you don't have problems with dairy, maybe add a glass of skim milk to your meals or when you get home at night. I think 8oz is 80 calories so you can get some calcium and help meet your calorie requirements without feeling overstuffed.0 -
There's a lot things you can carry with you while on the go. Cut up some veggies and fruit like carrots, celery, apples, blueberries and then bring along some dip like ranch dressing and/or peanut butter. Handfuls of nuts in baggies. Also add an extra side to your meals throughout the day. Eater a bigger breakfast. You can do this. Make a meal plan for a day and start adding food to the plan until you get to the 2300 calories so you can visualize what you need to eat in any given day.

Those kiosk machines are a riot....the ones at my fitness center show 1340 for 45 minutes of water aerobics, I take 3 classes.... crazy, no way can I eat nor want to eat back that many cals..so I just punt and figure it's about 1/3 of that from what the trainers have said.! I may have burned that 100 lbs ago but I have to work much harder now...which I'm fine by...lol I grab the ankle weights, the gloves the whole nine yards and work in the deep now as well.
I know there's water residant HRM's now but know very little about them...anyone? I think that might be the only way I'd feel comfy getting a real idea of how hard of workout I do in the water...for me the rest has to be pretty guess work. Except when I'm running or doing laps in the water..
Water aerobics is such a great place to start out, (it's been a good fit for me to bounce off of and move to others things and still keep the water classes in place) ....much safer on our joints etc. when heavier:drinker: :happy:0 -
One of the things that is not discussed much on this site is a "safe" calorie deficit based on your BMI. The site generally recommends no more than 1000 calorie deficit (2 lbs) a week. However, the more weight you have to loose the more you can safely increase that deficit. If your BMI is in excess of 40% than you can quite easily have a much larger deficit without any danger of starvation mode. That's how it's possible for the people on "Biggest Looser" to have such huge weight loss without going into starvation mode. If you're partnering with a nutritionist/doctor on your weight loss, they'll be able to give you safe calorie goals that will probably be a larger deficit than recommended by this site. Go by what they tell you rather than worrying about eating back exercise calories.0

Shorerider posted a great response to a question like this.
A peanut butter and banana smoothie.
Peanut butter + banana = pretty cheap to add to the groceries
Peanut butter + banana = high calorie, great tasting!!0 -
