Another hrm question

Hi

I've decided to start walking out in the open rather than the treadmill as I quickly loose interest on the treadmill. So I did 3.3miles this morning in about 55 minutes.

So I looked at my iphone app that recorded my route and it said that I burned 309 calories, then I looked at my HRM and it told me that I burned 1235 calories.

I have made sure that my details are correct on my HRM (Age, sex, weight, height and resting hr) and I know the phone app/MFP are only an estimate.

Is it possible that my HRM is correct, if so I'll be happy :)

It seems a little high to me. over a thousand cals in 55 mins is a very high burn for walking. Dbl check everything has been entered correctly on your HRM and maybe try the exact same walk again to compare the results.

What HRM are you using ?

Barring a malfunction in your HRM, I would trust your HRM!

3 miles and 1235 calories! If only! Your Iphone is more accurate. If you're using an HRM with a strap, most don't track length but your heart rate itself. But even that can be thrown off if your HRM is disrupted by another electrical item. For instance, when I'm not in my van, my resting heart rate is 70 beats per min. But when my van is turned on, the rate jumps to 149-229 beats per minute!!! Try not to use anything wireless while using your HRM.

No, that is way wrong. Sorry hun. 3 miles in 45 minutes gets me about 400 calories burned consistently. I would go with the Iphone stats. Did you zero it out before you started? Do you have a chest strap that goes with your HRM?

It may be high, but what your pedometer and third parties can't take into account is how fast you walked, any hills, difficult terrain...and so on. For example, my pedometer says I've barely burned off any calories after a walk in the woods, up the hill off the beaten track, wading through a river and climing over steep banking...a HRM would be like "WOAH! You're hearts beating a mile a minute! you're killing calories here girl!" o my pedometer would read that I'd burned only a few calories, and people who didn't know where I'd been and what I'd been doing would be all "Your HRM is reading very high" but it'd be correct. Of course I don't own a HRM to check this theory out, but I'm going with it as I firmly believe I use more doing that for an hour than a walk to tescos down the main roads, which is alo an hour...

In short, only you can know if it's posible, did you work up a sweat, did you walk fast? Did you go up hills? Do you feel as though you've potentially burned than many calories? If not, then the HRM is probably wrong, but if you do feel it then it's probably right. Eitherway, the iphone app is retarded and doesn't do jack all. I've got the same thing on my ipod and it doesn't work. On average going to the shop across the road is 1,500 steps, but there are days when going to the shops and doing the housework only regiters as 300 steps! And the calorie counter from it is pretty off charter too, taking nothing but step totals and weight into account, and I'm not ure it does that properly. I'd trust the HRM more than the pedometer.

Yeah I did think it looked a bit high, I was expecting something between 600-800 maybe.

I have Domyos hrm with chest strap and it is coded so it shouldn't interfere with anything.

I'll be doing 4 miles tomorrow so I will check again. I will also double check the settings again.

Would it be wise to knock of a few 100 calories of todays work out then?

I made sure that my route include some steep inclines so it wasn't all straight or downhill.

The app that I am using uses gps to track my speed and distance ( mapmyrun is what its called if anyone else has used it) today was the first time I used it so I don't know how accurate that will be.

    I'll see what happend tomorrow.

Go with the phone numbers for today. Tomorrow check your chest strap is tightly in place and well-moistened. Outside of interference, this is most likely to cause duff readings.

Is your HRM set for Kg's and you put the number of lbs you weight in so the HRM thinks you weight that many KG's instead of lbs? in other workds does you HRM think you are 200+ KGs

Here's something else to consider. Whether you walk a mile or run a mile (same exact distance) the caloric burn is essentially the SAME. The difference is the duration of time and your VO2 max.

No. This will not be true. There is different calorie expenditure. For me, quite drastic.

I guess it could depend on your weight? I do 4 miles in 60 minutes and it's barely 500 burned for me.
  • Even when I'm hill climbing, I amm yet to burn anything over 500 cals an hour - but I'm SO jealous if your numbers are right! Let us know tomorrow! x
