what is a troll? (Referring to the Internet.) I know I'm probably behind the times, but I really don't know. I've just seen it used in posts.

A "Troll" is someone who starts a different conversation on a blog/thread, completely undermining the integrity of the blog/thread, and changing the topic of conversation to something completely different.

One who posts a deliberately provocative message to a newsgroup or message board with the intention of causing maximum disruption and argument.

Trolling is the act of purposefully antagonizing other people on the internet, generally on message boards. When done in a moderated internet community, this can result in banning.
  • These are all good examples... Trolls generally pick fights for the fun of getting people riled up, and they benefit from it (for the lols) because they're not actually emotionally invested in the argument/ensuing madness from their comments/actions. They try as hard as they can to come off as sincere as to get a bigger reaction, and the better the troll is the easier it is for them to get someone upset and acting like a fool.
