New Job?!?!?!

Hey all, I just started my new job this week. They have given me the option of coming in on sunday (unpaid) to get some more training. Should I do it? Is this fair? Will they think I am lazy if I don't?

Unpaid??? Crazy, I've never heard of that! I wouldn't do it.... and I think I have a pretty good work ethic.0

Consider it an investment. I would go.0

I wouldn't go to work unpaid. Hell that's a day wasted outta your time.0
-
I would do it. It's only one day out of your life and it could give you an advantage when it comes to moving up in the company.0
-
dont sacrifice your whole day for it but it may come back on you later on if you chose not to go. Have you asked them if this is treated as overtime?0

That's pretty cheap of them. I, personally, wouldn't do it. Training to do a job for them that you would normally be paid for? Not so much. Training is on them.0

What kind of job is it and what are you training for? I would go at least for a few hours. They may think you need some additional training or are trying to see if you are really committed (although I do think they should pay you!).0

Depends on what level of job it is, and where you plan on going with the company. Are they offering it to you because you aren't catching on quite as quickly? Or maybe it's a chance to get ahead? If it's more of a career than a job, and/or you are looking to continue with the company and move up, I would recommend going in at least for a little while. As a manager, I have "donated"
a lot of time over the years. I just consider it a small cost of getting where I want to be.0 -

This is kind of a tough decision to make. I'm a little shocked that it would be unpaid - if you can get the same training on a regular PAID day then I would have to skip an upaid day.
However, if you take them up on the offer it would look good and show that you are interested in learning and gaining experience.
Is it going to be a full 8 hour day? That is something else to consider0 -
I would also say it depends on what type of job, where you plan on taking your job and then maybe offer to come in for 1/2 a day not a full day. I have also "donated" numerous unpaid hours but I am a salaried employee.0

I would go... I'm an unpaid intern, though, so right now I'm in the mindset of valuing experience over money (albeit begrudgingly at times lol)
The experience is probably worth it. Just make it clear that you're not interested in working unpaid hours in the future without being whiny about it.0 -
I would not go. But I would be tactful in my reason for not going. Saying that you have a religious commitment on Sunday is an easy way to get out of it and your company could never fire you for not "putting in the extra effort."

If you've got nothing better to do on sunday why not, its one day and it'll give a good impression, I'd do it and i'f look more favourably on others who would do it if I was in charge0
