Sorry for a repeat of a question asked often but I have a twist on it!
I am going back to school on August the 22nd. I am a sedentary person and have been for several years. Recently I have started incorporating exercise. I plan to walk long distances with intention, from the parking areas available. Also my classes will be on the 4th floor of which I will take the stairs.
I would like to have a reliable HRM that will track calories burned for the day as well so I can take some of the guess work out of the exercise I am getting in.
Any recommendations?

There are many options but if you can afford one, try to get a higher end model. A Polar with OwnIndex would be one of the most accurate.0

HRMs are only accurate for cardio exercise when your HR is elevated. It sounds like you are looking for something like the Body Bug which calculates your calories burned all day, at rest and during exercise.0 -
Polar FT4, best one ive ever had, easy to use and doesnt have the extras you wont need. Around $100.0

So walking a mile or up four flights of stairs wouldn't elevate my heart rate?0 -

Maybe the mile walk would, if you are pushing yourself, but 4 flights of steps would only take a couple of minutes and would not be worth calculating with an HRM, unless you are doing multiple times/day.0 -
Thank you will check this one out as well0 -
I would say up and down four times each throughout a day is good. I don't know about you but at my height/weight walking to the freaking bathroom elevates my heart rate!0

Looking at these now.0 -
I would say the body bug as oppose to the Polar HRM's. You can lose if you exercise or just all day calories burned calculator with the body bug.0

So these cover both regular exercise and calories?0 -
Yes, the body bug will work 24 hours a day and give you a reading of all activities in that day and the calories you burn. This would give you an even better number to work with when trying to make sure you are eating enough calories because you know that all activities will be taken in consideration.0

I just got a BodybuggSP a couple weeks ago and LOVE it!! You should get one! Calories burned on MFP is way over estimated as compared to real burns.:flowerforyou:0

I agree that BodyBugg of FitBit is better for the activity you are describing - more increasing your daily activity vs. sustained cardio activity. Both are fairly accurate for daily activity readings.0
