I have a friend who said shes been fasting for 4 days... Im just wanting to hear more opinions... I really need to realize I DONT NEED FOOD. Not like I been eating it. When I first started this I cut myself COLDTURKEY from everything and this time I cant do that cause Im so broke. I cant afford only fruits and veggies adn chicken and ground turkey and stuff. I only have money for .99 frozen meals and PB&J sandwichs. And I figured Fasting would be FREE! hehe

Not cold turkey from everythign as in fasting but coldturkey from foods i loved that werent good. Like fast food, snacks, tea, sodas, adn other not good foods. Sorry just had to clarify that!0

What's wrong with snacks and tea? There's really no need to 'fast', just avoid junk food most of the time. What habits can you adopt and live with for the rest of your life?0

Ok I hear ya on the low on money part...it's tough to get all the calories in when you can't buy the food, hopefully for both of us it's only a temporary situation.
Regarding fasting...there are a number of threads floating around on MFP might do a search and see what you find....many strong opionions both ways....so be prepared for some feedback here. :drinker:
It's tough because I rarely get hungry even if it's in between grocery days (when the pickins' are slim..lol)..exercise keeps me from ever getting hungry...I hesitate to share that on here because I don't want to encourage folks to not eat....that's not what I'm saying and that's SO NOT healthy to skip meals to lose weight etc. etc., just to clarify that it wasn't what I am talking about).
Just mentioning that's how I get... but I'm a T2 so it's a big deal for me to keep my blood sugars up and not taking a nose dive.
I try and do the best with what I have....if at all possible....go for carb/protein combos. ..Buy something in quantity and find ways to change it up a bit perhaps?
Nothing wrong with bread/PB combo for a protein/carb....I personally wouldn't go the white bread/enriched noodle route....even with a bit less money some weeks I still buy the healthy stuff and am creative.:drinker:
Best to you...I know it's stressful trying to eat healthy with extra low funds... here's to that not lasting too long for either of us!

There have been tons of studies and fasting does nothing for you in the way of weight lose. You may lose a little right off the bat. Because there is no waste (poop) in your body, and no extra water because you haven't consumed any sodium. But as soon as you start eating it will come back on.0

So for me to have been fat my whole life fasting isnt good to clean me out? To give me a fresh belly with good foods?0

Purdy-- there is a food chain ,"Aldi" that is singlehandedly keeping my family alive with their low prices. We're talking .69 loaves of bread, .39 cent cans of condensed soup-- 1970's prices. They also have dairy-- .40 for yogurts, and also fresh veggies and fruits-- among other stuff.
I manage to keep us in some healthy choices on the tightest budget you can imagine-- $600 per month for food for 11 people-- :noway:
There are 22 stores in Georgia, maybe there's one near you-- aldifoods.com0 -
I have fasted for 48 hours not to lose weight but to cleanse my system. Fasting is a way of detoxifying your body. I felt much better afterwards. There are tons of articles about it on the web you can check out.
I feel you on the budget issue. You can make your money go a long way and still eat good. I bought a 9 pack of frozen chicken patties for 5 bucks and they only have 180 calories each. Soups go a long way and are affordable to make, spaghetti, canned tuna or chicken, a bag of frozen veggies are a cheap side dish, go with canned fruit in natural juices if you can't afford the fresh. There are recipes on the web with 5 or less ingredients. The web is a pot full of answeres.0 -

Im broke too I cant afford to buy lunch out- but when I go grocery shopping I grab banana's and apples I buy my diet coke zero's if they are on sale or I just drink water- I bring my lunch whether it may be a sandwhich or a proteing bar or shake, fasting wont do anything but put your body in starvation mode cause when it finally gets its hands on food it will hold onto it since it doesnt know when it will get more- yes eating healthy is much more expensive thats why its cheaper to eat the bad stuff (why do you think americans are fat no offense to anyone) there are ways around it- I dont buy ground turkey or anything special like that- I cook chicken at home and put it in my my bagged salad and bring it to work-
As for PB&J there isnt anything wrong with it as a matter of fact I had one for breakfast and lunch- I eat regular dinners just smaller portions I use salad plates. You can still eat what you can afford just in moderation its portion control thats key thats what weight watchers jenny craig and all those other weight loss plans that cost you money- its about portion control eat what you can afford in moderation0 -

If I had to fast I would rip my DBF's head off, followed by my DS'sx2, and then 5 cats. There is NO WAY I would do that to myself unless I was getting a diagnostic test that requires it or having surgery. As far as it being cleansing, there's nothing fasting can do that plenty of water, a good laxative, and enema can't.
I know, I know, good visual on that, neh? But if fasters wanna fast, have at it. I just don't like to suffer.
Yes, Aldi's or Sav-A-Lot is a lifesaver. Most of my lunchtime meals are protein/carb combos with FROZEN veggies on the side (which are highly nuke-able), and I barely spend more than $25 a week for my food.
I make either a spaghetti with meat sauce or chicken noodle casserole, freeze them in portion size containers, and thaw one out the night before for lunch the next day at work. This works for me because I only have half an hour to eat. Also, invest a couple bux in ground flax seed, which has plenty of fiber - and fiber fills you and keeps you feeling full, so add that to everything you eat.
Good luck.0 -

I understand this. I did it in the beginning. I cut out all "white" foods (i.e. sugar, white rice, white bread, white pasta, potato). I did it primarily because they were mostly high calorie, low nutrition foods that I tended to rely on almost to the point of addiction. It forced me to form better habits and to choose healthier foods. I've slowly added some of that back into my diet but on a much more limited basis. I've added potatos back in because they are nutritional but I'm much more limited on how I eat them. (no fries, no butter) Sugar especially I've identified as a "trigger" food and it makes me loose control very quickly. I found that when I added it back in on an occasional cheat, I quickly lost control. I'd buy a large candy bar and break it into single servings or a bag of miniatures and for a while I did ok but then I'd start eating them everyday and then, more than once a day and then I'd start allowing other bad choices back in. Now, if I want sugar, I buy just one single serving like a single godiva truffle, otherwise I'm lost.
The only caution I'll give you is that you probably won't be able to maintain a "no fast food/soda/bad foods" forever program. Eventually you'll need to figure out when/how they are allowed to fit into your life without it throwing you completely off track.0 -
now when you say fast do you mean NOT EAT AT ALL!!! that is fasting to me not just cutting something out of your diet0

I would say that cutting out certain things in a fast is ok, but to NOT eat could be dangerous to your health: I would do a lot of research and talk to a doctor or nutritionist before a "no food" or liquid fast. Our organs need nutrients to keep functioning.
I have been out of work for 19 months, and I agree with the above posters regarding $$$.
Some ideas:
1. Soup: make your own. See the "recipes" section here. It fills you up and is good for you.
2. Buy the "loss-leaders" only. (The on-special stuff at the store.)
3. Buy only whole foods. That is where your dense nutrient are.
4. No soda pop, or any "empty-calorie" foods like sugary treats.
5. Beans and brown rice.
6. Chicken is way cheaper than beef, and is much better for you. Same with turkey.
7. A good multi-vitamin/mineral makes up for a lot of nutritional shortcomings.
8. Drink only water, it is cheap and the best thing for your hydration.
You can do it. :flowerforyou:0 -
