Just wanted to see if anyone recommends the Couch 2 5K program for an avid walker, but new runner. What have your results been? If I begin it, I will use the treadmill version and wondered what speed is good to use? I don't want my pace to be too fast or slow. Thanks for any input! :flowerforyou:

  • I hadn't run or walked any more than going to classes on campus when I started. I started my walk speed around 3 and my run speed around 4 to 4.5. I do have bad knees and wish that I had started even easier, because now my knees are hurting enough that i can't even run at all.

I was never a walker, let alone a runner.. and not only was I able to do it, I have since begun training for a half marathon coming up in October. I've lost 42 pounds and can run 8 miles at a crack now. It's totally do-able and nothing gets results faster than running.

i havent ran, jogged or pretty much anything for more then 20 yrs, ( since high school) i have been doing it now for 8 weeks, i am taking it slow and not advancing to the next week until i can do the whole jogs for the entire time before going on to the next week. i am in week 5 i have been doing the 20 min jog for a couple of weeks now. lol but if i can do any one can. I have had two heart infarctions i am only 38 and i have colapsed disk in my lower back and my left leg goes numb and has that asleep pins and needles feeling all the time. since i started the jogging it has gotten alot better and on days i dont run my leg will ache on days i do run it doesnt hurt at nights. sooooo i have all kinds of physical limitations and i am still doing it. like i said if i can anyone can.
  • I wasn't ever a runner. I started jogging this spring for a week or two and then I found the couch to 5k and I LOVED it! I think that if you want to start running and you never have before, it is perfect. When I started the program I had in mind that I wanted to run an official 5k and when I finished the program I had 2 weeks before my first official run. Ended up finishing my 5k around 29 minutes which for me, I thought was great. Plus I didn't have to stop and walk. I'm addicted to running now. Just finished my 10k and signed up for a half marathon in September! I can't wait. As far as results, I saw a big difference in tone in my legs and calves. In spring I was struggling with trying to find balance in what to eat, and didn't end up loosing much weight as I had hoped. My friend recommended me to this site and I started fitnesspal in early June and have lost 8 pounds so far. So this site, along with running, has really been working well for me. As far as pace, I struggled in the beggining with running to fast at first and burning out to have to walk. But, then I read that you only should jog as fast so that you can still have a conversation with someone. My advice is, start jogging slow, you can always speed up over time. You will eventually find what the right pace is for you. I also started reading books from Runners World on how to run your first 5k, 10k and so forth. They give great tips in there for begginers. And whatever your goal is, loose weight, stay healthy, to run a long distance, chances are that if you start running and keep up the great work, it will all fall into place. OOooo and biggest tip, go to a running store and get fitted for a pair of shoes by a professional. They will answer all your questions and help you find the right shoe for you. That way you can be comfortable and run as injury free as possible. Ok... i'm done babbling now. LoL As I take a deep breath. :) ! Let me know if you have any other questions. I can try and answer them. Good luck in your new endevor! I'm sure you will do great
