Ok, Im sure this is going to sound silly to you guys lol, but HOW do I take my measurements? I am embarrassed to tell you what I did...but here goes
I took a regular tape measure (which wasnt easy because it isnt very "bendy") and just measured around my belly and my hips:embarassed:
Yes, I am new to all this, but also very dedicated and determined! I beleive the first step is to use something that goes around the curves a little better? lol And next...WHERE do I measure? How do I know Im doing it right?
Now, Im gonna quickly hit "post topic" before I chicken out lol:laugh:

Well yes I would suggest getting a better tape measure first. After that you can really measure anywhere you want...just stay consistent in where you measure.0

Ok. So I am by no means an expert, but here is what I do.
I have a flexible measuring tape, like the ones a seamstress would use. About once a month I measure myself:
1) Around the chest -- at the biggest point
2) Around my hips/buttocks with my feet together -- at the biggest point
3) Around my arms -- halfway between my elbow and shoulder
4) Around by thigh -- around the biggest point
5) Around my calves -- around the biggest point
6) Around my stomach -- at my belly button
I measure both my right and left arms and legs. I think the most important thing is to be consistent on where and when you are measuring yourself. Also, don't do it too often because it will be hard to see results.
Also, if you don't have a bendy measuring tape I recommend using string to mark the size of each body part and then measuring the string with your measuring tape.
I hope that helps a bit. Good luck!0 -
I got my "tape" from the sewing section in Walmart. It goes around you easily wherever you measure.
You can measure wherever you want: hips, waist, bust, neck, arms, thighs, calves. I would probably do it every 4 weeks or so, or whenever you feel comfortable doing it. HTH!:flowerforyou:0 -
Thank you ladies!:flowerforyou:
So, there really isnt like a "textbook" way of measuring? I mean you can measure anywhere you want and keep track by re-measuring once a month?0 -
Thank you guys for this information and thank you nonibug for asking. I was going to do this today actually because I wanted to start measuring. Is it true you suck in while you are measuring?? Because that would make me feel a little bit better. :bigsmile:0

Hoping they say YES you can suck it in..... :ohwell:

I do exactly the same as kat wood and also:
1) make sure no clothes are in the way
2) dont forget to suck in-Dr Oz says this is the way!
3) I put a small peice of tape at the end of the tape and tape it to my arm, makes it easier. Also DONT flex!
4) I do High waist and low waist as well as hips. Measure at the smallest of your waist, or when you bend where is the crease. And then at belly button, and then hips too.
5) Make sure you have a low sodium the day before measure and make sure to go ya know, to the bathroom....
The best part about measurements is when you are really PO'd at the scale cuz it aint moving, you can ususally see a difference in inches
OH and the Drs say the number between your smallest point and your hips is the most important for health. When this starts going down, health risks do too! Or so I have read a million times!!
Good Luck and WELCOME!!0 -

We have to suck in?
Wow... that would eliminate at least an inch. As a novice seamstress, and having been taught by a professional seamstress, the way I measure is to stand straight and relax, because that's how you're going to be at lest 80% of the time, that way you get an accurate FIT for what you're measuring for.0 -
I just saw that on Dr Oz, and read it in a fitness mag. It is for health purposes, not to fit into a dress.
I can see your point, but I guess if you suck in the 1st time, and then the next it will all come out the same, right??:flowerforyou:0 -

Oh, I understand completely, it's just that we don't all stand around sucking our guts in all the time so my way of being 'accurate' would be the dressmakers way because it's more realistic to me.0 -
I didn't know about sucking in but I like it!
:laugh:0 -
Sheez I suck in so much I sometimes forget to breath! :huh:0
