Hey everyone! I have been using MFP for a few days, been eating good, drinking lots of water and lots of exercise. I just want to know if there is anything else I really need to know. I mean, is there a certain number of calories I need to burn a week in order to lose a pound of fat? I feel very uneducated in the dieting area and figured you guys would know the best since lots of you are losing weight. is there anything that has worked really well for you? Please let me know!

    3500 calories = 1 lb of fat! :) Burn 500 calories a day, or eat 500 less a day or eat 250 less and burn 250 you'll lose a lb a week!

I think it's 3,500 calories to 1lb body fat - which seems alot but if you create a deficit of 500 - 1000 a day, which MFP works out for you anyway, you should lose 1-2lbs a week! This site is amazing - I've learnt SO much, especially by reading through the forums. I'm still just a beginner too. Good luck!

1 pound = 3500 calories (if you eat that much more than you burn, you'll gain a pound, if you eat that much less than you burn, you'll lose a pound).

BMR = the calories your body burns just functioning, without any activity whatsoever (lying in bed, motionless).

TDEE= what you burn through your daily living

Exercise calories = what you burn while doing purposeful exercise.

The less processed the food, the more filling it is, the longer it takes to process (so you don't get hungry as fast) and the healthier you are.

Patience is key. You didn't gain this fat overnight and you won't lose it overnight.

Ultimately, it comes down to one main thing---finding out your MAINTENANCE caloric intake first! I'll use myself as an example. My maintenance intake is 2200 calories for a 5'7" 140 lb male. Now, if I eat at that many calories for a whole year, I really won't gain or lose any weight (technically I will but it will be mostly just water weight). If I eat 500 calories below my maintenance level, then I will lose weight. On the other hand, if I eat 500 calories above my maintenance level then I will gain weight.

How do you find this magic number? Use trial and error. The most accurate is this - http://www.freedieting.com/tools/calorie_calculator.htm Click the advanced option and use the Katch-McCardle method and enter your body fat %. Try to eat at the suggested level for a minimum of 2 weeks. If you gain weight, reduce your intake by 500 cals and observe again for another two weeks. So on and so forth.

Next up, you need to break down your calories into the proper macronutrient ratios---how many carbs, proteins, and fats. This is the easy part and there are tons of info about this stuff.

    Good luck!

try to avoid all kinds of fizzy drinks (even the diet ones) or juice with loads of sugar :) personally I drink only water, green tea with no sugar and a glass of milk in the morning, and I can see the first results that my cellulite actually is fading a bit :)
