First off, no this is not a voluntary fast, I have a colonoscopy on Wednesday morning. Today, sunday, I am on a restriced diet, and Mon, Tues, and Wed morning I can not eat. My question is, should I still exercise on an empty stomach, should I modify my efforts, and what should my first meal on Wednesday be to kickstart my metabolism again?

  • If you're fasting, I guess not only will you have no energy to exercise, but why would you want to exercise at this time?

I've had several colonoscopy's over the years (I have crohn's disease). My suggestion is taht on the restricted diet days I would still do some light exercise - you are still eating after all, and usually low residue foods that normally include protein. On the Wednesday don't do any as no food, and they inflate your bowel - it's best to rest afterwards. And sometimes they sedate you as well so your a bit dozy afterwards. When I've had it done, they normally give you some toast and a cup of tea when your vitals have settled (BP, Pulse, etc). Then just eat normally, but don't overeat.

    Hope that helps .....

It's best not to exercise when fasting. Get as much rest as possible. Some people do though, and for the ones who do, they might have a few pointers for you.

I get really cranky and depressed whenever I exercise on a fast day (I do them once every few weeks to keep my cravings in check).

I wouldn't exercise without eating, but would stay up on the liquids to minimize the dehydration. And for starting eating, you may want to go with clear liquids: tea with sugar, broth, jello for the first half day or so and then add back crackers, toast, etc. If you add solids too soon on an empty stomach you may have terrible cramping. Good luck!
