Iv heard alot of good things about taking whey protein when your dieting. However iv also heard alot of skepticism. Personally iv never tried the stuff but I'm thinking about testing it out. Can whey be effectively used in a weight loss regimen or is it more for the body builders?

  • i use whey in my breakfast smoothie - it gives me a nice dose of protein, and it's also somewhat filling -- my breakfast smoothie is usually a scoop of Jillian Michaels' Whey Protein, 1 cup or more water, half or whole banana, a truvia sweetner, and (this sounds weird but it's pretty good) some english cucumber or a handful of parsley. Oh yeah, I also add a teaspoon of psyllium fiber -- blend it and take my vitamins, and I am good to go!! I would not recommend relying only on the whey for your protein. One of my biggest dieting problems has been when I get "hung up" on only eating certain foods - inevitably, I get burned out and backslide....

My nutritionist recommends taking whey protein isolate. So I take a Body Fortress Protein Shot (26 grams of protein) everyday right after exercising. It gives me an extra boost of protein daily.
  • Whey all the way! My favorite is by Optimum Nutrition. It doesn't fill me up, but it helps me feel re-energized after a hard workout.

I'm getting Optimum Nutrition. If you use it, what flavor would you recommend?
  • Chocolate malt is the one I'm using now. It's so good!

Iv seen that weigh protein is a bit pricey. Are there any good sites that have them for fairly low prices?

What you really want is a whey isolate and micellar casein blend. It tastes better and gives you a mix of fast and slow burning protein. My personal recommendation is..

But yes it is perfectly fine. It comes in very handy for breakfast. A scoop of protein powder can add much needed protein to cereal, oatmeal, etc. If you not eating eggs or meat with breakfast then you need to pump your protein. Also, it is great for post workout recovery whether you are strength training or endurance training.
  • It is really pricey. I went into GNC and they were having a 50% off sale (your local GNC might be having the same sale, so go check!). I asked if they had any which were soon to expire (takes a few bucks off). They had one which expires in 7 months, so I ended up spending $13 on a normally $30 powder!
