How do jumping jacks compare to running?

Sometimes it is too late to do a run or the weather is bad. I want to still get cardio in, but I don't know what a good substitute is (without any equipment). So how many jumping jacks or other cardio (running in place, jump rope, etc) would I need to do to get similar effects to running about a 12 minute mile?

I've noticed that jogging in place and running 5 MPH burn the same amount of calories, so I often just run in place.0

Not sure how many you'd need to do, but give Burpees a try. URL for a demo video below. A general idea would be to go for 50, but if you could do 100 you'd burn some serious cals I bet.

Go under exercise and search in the database for those items - then check and see how many calories burned per minute, vs calories burned per minute running. I just checked and for me, jumping jacks appear roughly equivalent to a 12 min/mile. Personally, I think the jumping jacks are harder, and running in place about the same. If you have an HRM you can do a more scientific experiment and find out.0

I don't know about the equivalancy but if you do jumping jacks and maybe some butt kicks (running in place) for 12 minutes you will get a nice cardio workout. If you want to really make it tough throw in some high knees.0

My boxing instructor told me that a 30 minute run is equivalent to 10 minutes of jumping rope. I would guess that if you go nonstop, 10 minutes of jumping jacks would be the same. (:0
