Do you talk back to yourself??? or is it just me?

After 2 weeks of an *EPIC FAIL* in my diet, I'm trying to get back on track (a few less things on my plate right now whew!) In the fight with myself to keep my good *whatever you call it* going, here's what just happened:
I ate breakfast this morning, waffles, not too bad, and I got hungry mid morning and decided that I was going to eat some (not all) of my light cottage cheese that I brought to accompany my lunch. No biggie.
Well, half way thru the container, I outloud told myself "ok, enough, time to put it away so I'll have some for lunch" and from god only knows where this little voice said "oh hell eat it, you'll just get something out of the vending machine to go with lunch anyway". If someone would have been standing there, I would have slapped them. But lo and behold....I'm the only one in the office.
NO, I do not have Schizophrenia.
Does anyone else have this? And how the F* do you get that person to shut up? (Common sense tells me not to eat more to bury it). Thanks!

Well, I talk to myself constantly anyway so knowing me I would have said those words to myself outloud. I find that it helps to talk through things sometimes, even if you start out saying the wrong thing. Perhaps if you talk through why certain foods are a bad choice, it will help you to consistently choose the right things.
That's what works for me, anyway.0 -
HAHA! Yes! This happens to me all the time, especially when I'm running, "Your ankle really hurts you should stop." "Actually, Self, it doesn't hurt." "Now it does!" and then I keep going.
I have no suggestions, I quit drinking and smoking and did both at the same time and just told the little voice to...well it wasn't polite and it wasn't lady like. Mostly I ask if the quiet voice will run off the extra calories, and that will shut it up.0 -
Recognizing it is the first step Just be mindful of WHEN it happens. If it's always around food, you've built little pathways in your brain that dictate your thoughts about eating. Fortunately, those pathways can be broken, you can literally re-wire your brain! Next time you notice that sort of negative thinking, stop yourself, do NOT get onto yourself for thinking it, merely recognize you've done so and replace the thought with something positive. If you keep at it and are patient you'll be surprised at how automatic this can become0

I think we all have a voice telling us what to do! I have my breakfast around 8:00 and by 10:00 I will need a snack. In order to avoid eating what I brought to go with my lunch I try to keep fruit or something else at the office for my snack and that way I leave my lunch alone. Another trick, I don't bring any cash with me to work and that keeps me from snacking on the bad stuff!0

~chuckles~... Ever seen those comics with a person having a little angel on one shoulder and a little devil on the other? Same thing.
I tend to talk to myself at length, internally, and not just about food. My internal voice, however, is the one that thinks I need to behave, not misbehave.
In my case, I need to listen to her more so I don't think I'd be much help.0 -
I get this ALL the time...It just takes willpower to shut it out and stick to the plan!
The last one was last night, when the voice told me go and eat a packet of crisps. I got as far as getting it from the cupboard and putting my hands on the opening. I stopped, thought about it and decided that the 200 cals wouldn't do me any good and that I could just have a nice coffee instead. Job done.
Mental toughness I think it's called :-)0 -
Only when I want to have an intelligent conversation.0

I actually had an arguement with myself in my head this afternoon so I would not go to the shop at work for some chocolate... I went for an apple in the end and the craving for chocolate is slowly going away :laugh:0

I know the feeling!!!0 -
Sooo very normal!!! I have positive self talks with myself ALLL the time. It seems as if you are not packing a snack- if so, pack a snack (separte from your lunch) and that will hold you until lunch. As for the quitter aka "the negative" voice" redirect that focus to something positive consistent and eventually it will know who's in control. Really- it's mind over matter. Best~ ;0)0

Oh yes, I talk to myself all the time. People at work will be walking by and say "What?" thinking I am talking to them. Now they know I am just talking to myself.
In public, I talk to myself at stores "this looks good!" or "I think I have a can of beans". On the way home from a roadtrip I stopped at a McD's to use the restroom and get a soda, the restroom was closed and I saud outloud "You have got to be sh*tting me!" and perople in the next booth over looked at me like I was crazy. I really had to pee!!!0 -
I used to talk to myself. Now that I do exercise videos, I talk to Bob and Jillian. "Bob, you're killing me." "Jillian, you're really annoying." Etc.0

LOL! I always talk to myself when I run. If I start to tire I say things like "dont quit now" or "c'mon move your *kitten*". Sometimes in the supermarket I'll pick up junk food & say "you really don't need that" & put it back. Guess we're all a little crazy.0

I talk to myself out loud all the time. So, I wonder how many times when I'm riding my bike alone, people outside hear me and thing I'm nuts. Sometimes the talk is about food - like when I'm looking in the cabinets seeing what there is. I find myself talking to myself about whether or not I'm really hungry, and if so, what for? Take heart - you're not alone! At least if you talk to yourself, you'll always have company!0
