Perscription medications and your weight loss

Hi all. Just another FYI.........we learn then pass it along.
I was given a prescription for neuropathy, or a patch of skin that feels hot. It was due to a foot injury and I had already been given an injection, which I thought was enough.
Well the dr has a card from a major drug company for 7 free days of this medication. I advised him I was not looking to add another chemical to my body, as I had just gotten off of 2 strong drugs due to my diet and exercise.
He was hell bent on me filling the script, and trying it for the 7 days. Then if it didnt work, I could stop.
I took the drug for 3 days and had horrible nightmares causing me to clench my jaw, as well as lose sleep for 2 nights. On the 4th day I awoke to very painful left jaw pain TMJ, and could not chew. It is still sore, but getting better.
I went on line and googled: the drug, side effects, patients
I had formerly just googled the drugs website.
Well I read the side effects that patients experienced (and for some reason continued with the drug for 1-2-3 years:noway: )
Her are a few:
night mares
night terrors
loss of sleep
little or no relief from the pain
jaw pain
headaches
weight gain........:noway: :noway:
WHAT..............WEIGHT GAIN!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! NO FREAKIN WAY!!
I went to my regular family doctor and told him about the drug and side effects. He of course said stop it right away, as I do not need it. If the neuropathy doesnt go away in 2 weeks come back to him.
For the TMJ he said to eat soft foods, take aleve and let him know if it gets better.
Be careful! Speak to your regular physician before trying anything. Just because they have PHD after their name, does not make them the expert on YOUR body! If it doesnt feel right to you, get a 2nd opinion. I dont know if they get a kick back from offering these drugs, or if he really believes in it, but either way we need to take care of our bodies.
As for my foot-it is great with the 2 steriod injections. I can now do my exercise as usual WITHOUT another dangerous chemical in my body
Weight gain............jeez:grumble: :grumble: :grumble:

Good investigative work girl!
Hey just think... now you know you had something that made your weight loss battle extra hard... but you still were successful even with it!
I also have had issues with this problem. I don't take anti-depressants anymore primarily because the majority of them can cause weight gain..
Keep up the good work!:drinker: :drinker:0 -
Good advise, and I absolutely agree. My personal physician knows that I don't like to take medication and is very careful not to prescribe any unnecessarily. I've been to other doctors that will just put you on anything. I've also had experiences with some doctors who will put you on anything YOU ask for! Can you beleive that? In a world where prescription medication is so abused a doctor would let you tell them what to prescribe....
I also had a friend once whose doctor put her on medication for dizzy spells. When I read the side effects of her medicine it stated "warning this drug may cause dizziness and blackouts". OMG
It's no wonder our medical costs are so high.0 -

My all time fav is the drug for losing weight and then in a tiny voice in the commercial says "may cause anal leaking!" HELLO that is poo!
I can hear the conversation at work
"Jeannie looks great, but MAN she stinks!!":laugh:0 -
I'm kinda going through the same thing but there's not much I can do about it. I got Mirena (the IUD) inserted in February and gained 10 pounds and it has been very hard to lose that plus the other weight I need to lose. There's not much out there as far as birth control goes that doesn't cause weight gain so I'm pretty much stuck. I have to work twice as hard as normal folks to lose the same amount of weight and it sucks!!!0

that was the first thing i did when the doctor gave me meds for a skin infection last night. told DH better not have weight gain as side effect or he needs to give me something else.
great work.0 -
