Pedometers

Ok so I have been wearing a pedometer every day for about 3 weeks now. Problem is, Im finding it to be VERY inaccurate. For instance just to test it, say I walk across the room...say 25 steps. Ok I stop and look at the pedometer and it says I took like 56 steps!:noway:

I wear it on the waistline of my pants towards the front (like if you had on a pair of pleated pants, right where the pleat would start). I wear it there because the instruction and tips booklet that came with said to wear it there?? Ok admittedly, it was only $5 at Walmart, but I also read that you dont need to spend much money on them...?

Does anyone have any similar experiences with them? Do I need to invest in a more expensive one? I basically just use it to log how active I am from day to day because Dr Phil (yes, I love Dr Phil lol) said that the recommendations now are at least 10,000 steps per day and more if your trying to lose weight.

I have the Omron HJ-720ITC (that's ITC - the letter 'i', not a "one"). Check it out on Amazon.com.

I love it, and it's very accurate all the time. I paid $32.00 for it two years ago, and I wear it every time I leave the house. It is also my watch. 10,000 steps isn't that tough, and I find if I'm wearing it, I tend to take the long way 'round to add steps.

Did you adjust the stride accurately?

Well, if it's supposed to measure your steps, then you might have to step on it. Or make sure it detects every step you make by being pressed while you actually take the step. Then you might also have to calibrate it.

At least this is how my IPod+Nike kit works. I usually put it inside my shoe, on the sole, but my hubby has a gadget to put it just under the laces. I had calibrated it the first time I used it - though it did not seem necessary then and now that we both use it, it seems like it needs some calibration again...

I have to admit, though, that it's not a pure pedometer, and not the cheapest one.

Yes! I take the long way around as well just to add steps lol even though it isnt very accurate. Since doing it for 3 weeks, I have an idea (although not an exact one) of how much Im doing in a day just by keeping track of the readings I get at the end of the day. For example, if it says 18,000 at the end of the day today, well i KNOW that because its inaccurate that I didnt REALLY take 18,000 steps....but when I compare that say to the 12,000 reading it gave me the day before I at least know that I did more lol...does that make sense?

Also, cmriverside...how can a pedometer track steps on your wrist? I cant see how it would "know" when your taking steps? I need waaaaay more technology in my life!

The Omron I mentioned requires you to measure your steps, you enter that. (CALIBRATE). You enter your weight. I don't remember if I entered my resting heart-rate, but it may ask for that too, since it does tell me how many of the steps I took were "aerobic". Then you know it is accurately measuring YOUR stats. The clock is a bonus, and since I always have it with me, it's easy to use as a watch (in my pocket), since I don't like wearing a watch on my wrist.

LOL, I dont wear it on m wrist. BUT - if you go to Amazon and check it out, you'll see that this one is the only one that you can put in your pocket or purse or backpack or on your belt and it STILL measures correctly. I've checked it by walking on "known" distances, and it is right-on (it comes with belt clip, and tether to secure it to your clothing.)

It comes with 30-day tracking software you can install on your computer that I don't use, but it would be great if I had the time. But you can check ON the unit itself the last seven days of your results.

And BTW, it is really easy to "Calibrate" NO tech experience needed. Just a tape measure and two pages of instructions.
