Confused about strength training

This is probably a really dim question, but is strength training anything that isn't cardio? I've been reading how it increases muscle and therefore metabolism that way, and I'd really like to incorporate it into my routine (I already run, swim and cycle) - but I'm not really sure what it involves? Do I need weights to do it? Thanks :) xx

There are lots of different ways to strength train. If you don't have equipment, you can start with bodyweight exercises.
www.bodyrock.tv is a great resource for quick, effective bodyweight exercises. Lately they've been using more equipment to intensify the workouts, so if you're up for buying new toys it's a great place to start because they tell you EXACTLY what to use.

You can also use smartbells, which are ergonomically designed weights.

Or, the tried and true dumbbells. These are great for overall strength and metabolism building. Google dumbbell workouts for ideas.

For a starting weight, go for something challenging but not impossible. You should be able to do about 10-16 repetitions of any exercise with your weights. I would start with 8-10lbs, then increased to 15lbs in a couple weeks. After about a month you should be able to lift around 20lbs without too much difficulty (if training regularly)

    Hope this helps.
