Im 5'2 & 150 lbs.. (just gained the last 10lbs in the last 2 months since I quit smokin cigs) now I wanna drop the 10 lbs & additional 10 lbs. I just started workin out yesterday (jackies total body circuit trainin that burns 487 calories) if im supposed to eat 1200 per day, do I still eat the 1200 plus the 487 calories? Like today after I finished my intake for the day, I still had180 calories left but thats countin the 487 from workin out.. Im confused! I dont wanna workout for nothin if im not gonna loose anythin.. :(

I try not to eat the calories gained back by exercise.

    Yes.

The amount of calories initially reported are based on your basal metabolic rate (the amount of energy required just to keep your body working optimally). If you exercise on top of that then you need to eat extra to cover for the amount you exercised as well. The hard part is usually eating enough calories especially if you eat healthy

I'm struggling and confused by this too.

I'm 5'2 and weigh 87kg (193lbs). I'm wanting to lose 50lbs in total. I have my goal set at 1,200 calories - but I usually hover around 1,200 - 1,300 intake from food, then I burn a fair bit. So yesterday for example I still had 662 calories remaining after food less exercise. Which really seems like too much leftover.

As this is my first week using MFP, I'm just testing it all out, see what works! I'll just keep adjusting intake and expenditure til I find what's good for me.

    Good luck

Even if the weight loss is not quite as fast as you like it....you're still going to get some wonderful health benefits.

    Well said!

I think this ends up being the biggest problems for dieters.

It is hard to measure your success by just simply aiming for a goal weight, and if you are only using scales as your measuring tool you don't actually find much out about the quality of the weight loss.

A guaranteed way to lose weight would be along the lines of set yourself small fitness goals. Start with trying to run a 5km in under 30 minutes and then aim for something else, like 30 pushups nonstop etc. These small subgoals will keep you entertained and motivated. Not only that but you will be fitter, stronger, use fat more efficiently as a fuel and become leaner as a by product.
