16 Year Old Bride?!

  • I think it goes beyond her parents letting her marry him for money. Unless he paid for all that plastic surgery. I would rather go back to my highest weight then look as fake as her.

SO TRUE SHE DOESNT LOOK 16 OH WELL TO EACH THIER OWN !

I agree Skinny. No laws were broken and if both of them are okay with it, who are we to cast stones. It is ok to have an opinion, but let us not judge, because we all have our own demons to fight. I once heard a radio DJ say, "If we knew what our neighbors were doing in the privacy of their home, we would be in complete shock".

Look past the age gap and try to see two people in love. I know it is hard, but try anyway. May look at it differently. And yes, I did marry a girl younger than me---by 4 years.

its even worse when Afghanistan and arabic countries girls get married at 12 to old men.

Grim as it seems to us, not all Arab or muslim countries practise this. I think it's grossly unfair to tar everyone with the same brush. There are also muslim African nations who not only marry off their daughters at around this age but circumcise them during childhood. No doubt some of our practises seem barbaric to other peoples. :ohwell:

Regarding the original post; I don't believe that having sex with a 16 year old counts as paedophilia. Certainly in the UK, the age of consent is 16, and I'm guessing that since the couple was allowed to get married, then the age of consent there (USA?) is also 16. While she may not have reached the age of majority, she certainly isn't a child.

As to the reasons behind the marriage - who knows? Not me, that's for certain. I don't know the couple (in fact, I don't even know who you're talking about!), and even if I did, I wouldn't presume to know the reasons for their union. When all is said and done, if it doesn't affect your life, why worry about it?! And why waste your energy postulating about it being a career move for the young woman in question?

My husband and I have a 20 year age difference between us. However, I was 25 when i married him, not 16, and i had been divorced already, which means I knew what marriage was all about and what I wanted in a marriage, and he and I have known each other for at least 10 years. He's a freak and she is a fame wh***!! And her parents are nuts!! My 16 year old child is not gonna be dressing like that!!! Over my dead body!!
  • am I the only one who thinks that this girl is on drugs??? ok in the interview did you see the way she was acting and staring at his mouth lol

 That's been my general argument for a while: straight people haven't done much for the sanctity of marriage lately (between stories like this and upwards of a 50% divorce rate).

I'm not worried about it, I was simply stating on opinion, something I am entitled to and something you are entitled too as well. In case you missed where I posted this topic under, it was Chit Chat. That's all I was looking for.

Seriously, this just pisses me off. My good friends who have been in long term loving relationships can't legally get married, and yet these two yahoos can?

Aside from it appearing totally staged and disgusting; if they were truly "soul mates", why not wait until she's LEGAL. What's the rush?!

I'm going to be 51 this year and when I think of 16 year old girls, all I think about is emotional outbursts, incessant texting and abject disrespect for adults. What man, in his right mind, would voluntarily put himself through that??

I agree there's something wrong w/ the union even without the age difference. They are full of it. Legally, however, if the parents consent, Nevada has no choice but to allow the union unless one proves to be a danger to the other; in which case the problem still won't be the age gap as that state doesn't legally recognize age gaps. Nevada also doesn't recognize the Mistake of Age defense either, if the groom wanted to go that route he'd be screwed. In Arizona (Mistake of Age defense recognized) and California, there are NO minimum ages, in Massachusetts the minimum age is 14 for a boy and 12 for a girl. All of this is only with parental or judicial consent though. It happens but not often and the reason this story is making a splash is because he was in a hit show and the age gap is so big. It's easier to be a 16 year old girl just married to a 20 year old boy just cause they can look like they are dating and therefore it isn't as alarming. It's still disturbing though, how this couple uses each other and the media. I guess she doesn't have enough talent on her own to get noticed. I also wonder if her parents are also using their daughter to make money for them since they allowed the marriage. This is something that will get them major news again when they divorce, and it will probably be a nasty one too (because that's the major publicity)
  • I'm not condoning weird/inappropriate relationships or anything but I was engaged at 17 to a man 8 years my senior and we've been happily married for 3 years now (no kids)... I know it's hard to imagine (I'm having a tough time fitting THAT age gap in my head, honestly) but it's possible that they really do have a normal loving relationship... Now, the probability of that being true is based on things I can't possibly know about those two people but it's not fair in my eyes to speculate when I don't know them.

Not wagging my finger at anyone, just my input :)

    My two cents:

I dont' agree with it but I think labeling him as a pedophile is extreme. She is 16 not 6, and probably can get into most bars without being carded.

As for those questioning the parents letting her dress like that, have you been living under a rock? My wife struggles to find appropriate clothing for our daughter. We went to an amusement park ealier this month, and the place was crawling with teen and pre-teen girls wearing revealing clothing. Many of which were with their parents.

Granted, in today's modern Western society, this seems strange, and to me it is. However, not too recently here in America, it was NOT unusual for girls to marry very young for several reasons. These same reasons hold in some non-western and third world countries as well.

First of all, if you look at the average life expectancy of people in general in those areas, it typically is not very old. Most women are considered "old" at forty. Most do not live to be 60. So if you marry a girl while she's young, she has more time to give you children.

If you look at the medical services they have, it is nowhere near what we enjoy, and many women still die in childbirth, not to mention the infant mortality rates, which brings me back to point #1.

Also bear in mind, that when my mom taught high school in Southern Louisiana, she had a 14 year old female student who had already married, divorced and was getting ready for her second marriage. THAT was some serious culture shock for me, but again, culture being the key word here.

But, if these are supposedly main-stream Americans, I personally have to seriously question the wisdom of such a union.

In some states in America you can get married at 13, and that's meant to be a civilized country!
