Biking War Stories

I live in Colorado near the foothills. Last Wednesday evening I was making my mind up about going for a ride. The skies were clear and beautiful, so off my husband and I went for our evening ride (generally between 16 and 20 miles.) We got about 9 miles in and heard thunder. We turned for home immediately, disappointed that our ride was cut short. We got within 2 miles of home and it started to rain. (No big deal, if you bike you get wet and muddy...just the way it is.) We got within 1.5 miles of home and it started to hail. (Still no big deal because it was small and probably short in nature.) We got within 1 mile of home and the hail went from pea size to golf ball size. I shook my head and pressed on. Then it started to hurt...then hurt ALOT...then I was bleeding from several places from the impact.
I finally decided that the beating I was taking from the hail storm outweighed the danger of taking cover near a tree. I went behind a tree, not too close but enough to be out of the wind. Hunkered down behind the tree and behind my bike. Shortly it stopped and I was able to ride the remaining distance to my home.
I ended up with 92 huge bruises and cuts from ankle to head and a slight concussion (my helmet was dented from the impact.)
In spite of that my time on my bike is the highlight of most days. I just love the feeling, but I am looking pretty beat up these days. Just thought I would share this interesting event. I am sure that other people have exercise war stories as well.
