Runners, thoughts on compression socks?

I was curious if any of you runners use compression socks during or after your runs? If so, what advantages to you think they give you? I read an interesting article about them on runnersworld.com and I just wanted to hear about some real world experience.

Not sure if they are considered compression socks, but I recently cracked my wallet open and invested in 4 pairs of Adidas Climacool socks, and I'm in love. I'm a sucker for any Adidas gear, but these are practical as well as cool looking.

I wear them after after a long or hard run. I've found I'm less stiff and sore.

I wear them during, if I'm having any problem with my shin or calves that I want to clear up. It usually seems to help with that as well.

I'm talking about the knee high socks that are tight around your calves. Supposedly they help circulate unoxygenated blood from your lower legs up and out so it can be replaced with oxygenated blood. I think it helps with recovery.

I seem to have a sore right calf after runs so I was hoping they might help with that.

Does this include shin splints? I'm starting to get them (thanks, properly fitting shoes! I didn't realize how crappy the support in my other ones was!) and it's annoying the crap out of me.

I'm not sure exactly what you mean by compression sock, but I live and die by these:

There is a men's version as well. When I first bought them, I could hardly stand that I spent that much on SOCKS. Now that I own 9 pair and use them for all my gym and running activities, I couldnt imagine NOT having them and would probably spend more.

I wear them during long runs via the doctors orders. I have low blood pressure and was passing out after running hard- so now I wear them. I don't mind them all that much... I try to find them in fun colors- but that just fits my personality!
  • I use compression socks and sleeves. I use the sleeve when I run or walk. I then use the compression full sock after my workout. I had gotten shin splints (bad) from wearing bad shoes. the compression socks saved my life. they helped with the recovery the most and I was able to continue to workout. I highly recommend them. My husband is a marathoner and he swears by them.

    This is very convincing.

They have helped me with shin problems as well.

But they're no out and out substitute for RICE and a good doc.

Yeah, I'm jealous that women have a lot more fashion options when it comes to running gear. I think those arm warmers look so good on girls.

Hell no! The guys I run with have fun! Some of the guys wear shorts with hot peppers on them and all sorts of crazy stuff. The key is just not caring what other people think. It's the same with women who limit themselves as well.

I have the Injinji compression socks based upon the advice of my podiatrist. Love them, except when it's hot 80's+, they get pretty warm. But my legs are far less fatigued on long runs then they would be otherwise. I also lather on the BenGay before every run on my feet and calves based on his advice, works too.

I will take that into account when I shop for new gear. And for some reason, I'm attracted to bright colors. I just saw those new Newton shoes and I'm very interested in them.
