too much sleep?

Okay, so i know everyone likes to sleep and it's usually advised that you have around 8 hours sleep (-or something like that?) well, anyway, i manage to sleep for around 10-12 hours every night. I was wondering if sleeping less, more like 8 hours, would help me lose weight better?
Sleeping as much as i do means i tend to eat less when i am awake, but if i do sleep less i tend to be pretty tired throughout the whole day. Will this get better if i get into the habit of less sleep?
thankyou!

Actually, I think more sleep is probably better for your weight loss (and better for you overall). You have less time and inclination to eat during the day, tend to have more energy, and overall just feel better. The little bit more you'd burn being up for those extra two hours instead of sleeping would probably be offset by your tiredness and your need to eat more. As long as you're fairly active while you're up and around, I'd stick to getting those nice long blocks of sleep. :-)0

I won't argue with that! Just wanted to make sure, thanks very much!0

Hi there!
I noticed your age. Because you're a teenager, extra sleep is probably a good thing. I function best on 10 hrs.0 -
everybody is different, so listen to YOUR OWN BODY. I'm happy as long as i get 4 uninterrupted hours, if I had 10 hrs I would probably be more lethargic than usual0

I am extremely jealous that you have 10 to 12 hours to sleep!! I am lucky if I get 6 to 7 and I don't watch TV at night!0 -
I did sleep more as a teen too, but if you're needing up to 12 hrs, and feel like you really NEED it, you might want to get your thyroid tested to be safe. Sleeping 12+ hours a night was the first sign I had of a problem in my late teens. Do you tend to be cold a lot? Are you gaining weight in spite of the same level of exercise that used to be fine for you to not gain? Is your hair falling out or are you getting ridges in your fingernails? All signs of hypothyroidism (underactive thyroid), if you have them.0

Not to be too personal, but how old are you? I'm pretty sure that sleep needs can vary greatly by age, and I clearly remember sleeping for that same amount of time (when I could) as a teenager. I think the bottom line is that you need plenty of sleep for weight loss, and however long it takes for you to wake rested and energetic, that's probably what you need.
Also, enjoy being able to sleep that long...I consider it a huge victory if I can get 7 or 8!!0
