just watched a video about how fructose is different from glucose and y it is bad. video is very long but informative.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=dBnniua6-oM&feature=player_embedded

so i was thinking read the labels of the food u have in ur diet and share the percentages of corn syrup (which is fructose) here on this post so tht we can conclude wht should be cut from our diets.

personaly im not afraid coz i dont take sodas, alcohol and canned food but still even if a buy a brown flour to make my bread i dont know whats in it? we dont even know in how many forms these bad things r coming in our diet without our awareness.

if any chef here on MFP let us know the amount in breads, confectionery made in bakeries, esp if somebody knows abt brown khubz (arabian pita)

So lets share!

It's BAD. Why bother look at percentage? I cut it ALL THE WAY (as much as I can).

just start reading labels and ask at the bakeries that you frequent. If they are quality places they will be happy to disclose.....

    i totally avoid.

Corn syrup is in just about everything, even hot dogs. I'm deathly allergic to corn, it closes off my throat so I can't even allow little amounts to slip by. Between that, my milk intolerance, refined sugar intolerance and all things gluten there isn't a single package of anything I can eat except one brand of potato chips. Everything else I have to cook for myself and my family from scratch.

    Corn syrup is evil.

Exactly!! I try not to buy anything with it. Sometimes it's unavoidable b/c it's so pervasive, but there are a lot of non HFCS alternatives out there for many foods.

In the U.S., nearly everything that is mass manufactured and has any sweetening at all will use High Fructose Corn Syrup, since our Corn industry is so heavily subsidized by the government, it is extremely cheap. In other counties, Cane Sugar is cheaper and used more.

A lot of fruits have a high fructose level, but the Fructose/Sucrose/Glucose ratios vary widely from fruit to fruit.

and no, @icerose, it's not in everything.... it is in alot of highly processed, manufactured things which generally have alot of things that aren't so great and scarce on the good stuff like fiber....

there are also more grocery stores that have policies to help consumers (sorry not sure where everyone lives)..... Fresh n'Easy (in US) states that none of it's own branded stuff has it, and I'd say over 95% or more of what's at Trader Joe's doesn't have, nor Whole Foods....

My New Year's Resolution this year was to quit consuming anything with high fructose corn syrup in them. Mostly because I'm trying to get more healthy, and it was in all of my favorite foods/beverages: soda (I refuse to drink diet), and crackers/cookies/cakes/breads.

However, I revamped the resolution in May to be that I refuse to eat anything that I cannot pronounce or know what it is. And this was a direct byproduct of reading labels to find which ones had HFCS and added sugars in them.

And then I watched the sugar video just a bit ago and now I'm HORRIFIED!

I'm going to a whole foods approach of not eating any added sugars in my food. There goes my Stubbs BBQ sauce :)

EDUCATE YOURSELF and DON'T be afraid of fresh fruit people.....

Fructose, or fruit sugar, is a simple monosaccharide found in many foods. It is one of the three important dietary monosaccharides along with glucose and galactose. The organic fructose molecule was first discovered by French chemist Augustin-Pierre Dubrunfaut in 1847.[3] Fructose is a white solid that dissolves in water – it is the most water-soluble of all the sugars.[4] Honey, tree fruits, berries, melons, and some root vegetables contain significant amounts of molecular fructose, usually in combination with glucose, stored in the form of sucrose. About 240,000 tonnes of crystalline fructose are produced annually.[5]
Fructose is a component of sucrose. Sucrose is a disaccharide derived from the condensation of glucose and fructose. Fructose is derived from the digestion of table sugar (sucrose).
Crystalline fructose and high-fructose corn syrup are often confused as the same product. Crystalline fructose, which is often produced from a fructose-enriched corn syrup, is the purified monosaccharide. High-fructose corn syrup, however, refers to a family of mixtures of varying amounts of fructose and glucose.

    THEY ARE TOTALLY DIFFERENT THINGS

Fructose is found in fruit naturally. High Fructose Corn Syrup is genetically modified and not at all healthy. It's in many things you wouldn't expect: bread, tomato soup, ketchup.

I work in food manufacturing. Corn syrup is used for a reason. Yes, it's cheap, but it has certain properties that make it desirable for use in many baked goods. Do you like soft baked cookies? Corn syrup. Do you like ice cream that isn't grainy? Corn syrup. Just to name a few...

I should have added a disclaimer. I'm so far out in the middle of nowhere, walmart is still a 60 minute drive away at highway speeds. There's no such thing as a Fresh n'Easy, Whole Foods or Trader Joe's within a 3 hour drive of my place.

High fructose corn syrup can be found even in products which aren't sweet, such as sliced bread and processed meats like sausage and ham.

    COPIED:

The USDA recommends that a person with a 2000 calorie, balanced diet should consume no more than 32 g (8 tsp) of added sugar per day. Here are some sweet foods and the percentage of the daily recommended amount of sweeteners they provide:

typical cup of fruit yogurt - 70%
cup of regular ice cream - 60%
    12-ounce Pepsi - 103%
Hostess Lemon Fruit Pie - 115%
serving of Kellogg's Marshmallow Blasted Froot Loops - 40%
    quarter-cup of pancake syrup - 103%
    Cinnabon - 123%
    large McDonald's Shake - 120%
large Mr. Misty Slush at Dairy Queen - 280%
    Burger King's Cini-minis with icing - 95%

Corn syrup and High Fructose Corn Syrup are still different. They both do make things creamy or soft though.
