Bike, Run, Stairs

I am really wanting to challenge myself the month of August. I want to set goals of x miles on bike, x miles running and x flights of steps to do in the month. Anyone else ever do this? How did you decide where to start/set your goals? Did you meet your goals? I go to the gym on average 4 times a week but will be changing that in August to hopefully 5 or 6 times a week, with Sundays off.
