Name that sushi!

For lunch today I decided to treat myself to sushi. I had what was called a Windmill roll and it's not listed in the food database. I picked California roll as I think it was closest but maybe there are sushi people out there than can point to a better match.

The inside was crab meat, asparagus and avocado, sushi rice and wrapped in a green soy wrapper. Salmon on top. They were served tipped over in a windmill pattern. They were topped with something crumbly that was the same color as pickled ginger but not the taste, and a teaspoon of an pale orange/peachy sauce on top of that.

Any ideas? I'd like to find a close match calorie-wise because it was fantastic and I would like to order it again.

Was the sauce on top creamy? If so, sounds like mayo!

No idea what that is but it sounds delicious!!

California rolls are one of the lowest calorie sushi rolls. That sounds like it had a lot more calorie than those. But I mean honestly, it's not a huge deal. I would just say you had more than you actually did. I gues-timate alot of my calories and I'm still losing :)

    Yummy! Now I want sushi.

I think you are right on that. After you suggested it I searched for sushi mayo and found a picture of Japanese mayonnaise with red chilies that looks just like what I had. And they have that in the database- Kewpie Japanese mayonnaise: 100 cal/tbs. Definitely need to revise my calories upward.

Sushi doesn't have to be a special treat! Best to get plain sashimi or sushi (with rice on the bottom) with low-sodium soy. Some places have the option of brown rice for the added fiber and nutrients.

Just stay away from anything with "special sauce" and "fried" and you're golden!

Well, I haven't heard of a roll quite like the one you had, but you might try seeing if you can find calorie information for a rainbow roll. It's a very common sushi that's a California roll with various pieces of fish and avocado laid in overlapping strips across the top. I would think that would be a bit closer calorie-wise. As for the crumbly topping, it could be several things. The first thing that comes to mind is masago, which is a bright orange roe.

Good luck on getting a better estimate. It sounds quite yummy and definitely something to have again.

im obsessed with sushi...i would think they would all be rather similar in calories (unless they are battered or have a lot of sauces on top etc). I would recommend trying sashimi over rice, ikura (salmon roe), and uni (sea urchin eggs). You won't regret it. :glasses:

    Thanks all.
Bingo! Looked for images and the topping was masago. I knew I'd find answers here. :)

I consider sushi a treat-or reward because of the prices, not because it's bad for me.
I've only learned to like it this year. I'm still doing rolls, trying different ones.
I do like the rainbow roll-except I'm not sure I like the texture of the red fish.

I didn't even know there were fried versions-seems to defeat the purpose of sushi for me, which is the mixture of textures and flavors. But I'll be sure to stay away from them.

Thanks so much for the help and the suggestions. I think I will try the sashimi, et al. next time.
