Tips for Diminishing the Derriere

I have been researching exercises to help me to target my backside. While I am more hourglass-shaped than pear-shaped, I seem to carry a lot of my extra weight in my very low back and rear end (just above the gluteus maximus, which I think is the gluteus medius). All of the lower areas (upper thighs and lower rear) can also use work.
I am 5' tall and can sit down next to a 6-foot person and be higher in the chair because of the size of my..."cushion." It disturbs me.
I have read that squats help, but I have great trouble with these because of an old knee injury.
I know that it's been said that you can't force weight loss in certain areas (spot-reduce), but are there any exercises that might help? Will bent-leg donkey kicks do the trick? Are there any other suggestions for toning exercises that do not significantly stress the knees?

Well, there goes that. Heh.
Therein lies my problem...0 -
Since I started cycling/mountain biking and doing 100-200 lunges per week (because it's very specific to the cycling movement) my legs and tush have really become more shapely and firm. I still squat heavy though. And of course fat loss.0

A couple years ago, I was sidelined from my normal running routine because of injuries. So I switched to power walking for a few months and it took inches off my butt and hips (more so than running -- I guess you use different muscles).
Also, a friend of mine swears by this Tracy Anderson sequence (I haven't done it so I have no idea if it would hurt your knees). But since it's free on Youtube it might be worth a look:

Ooooh...cycling. There's a thought! I have actually been looking at spinning bikes but I think a basic road or mountain bike may be more beneficial unless I REALLY crank up the tension on the spinner.
My knee doesn't seem to mind cycling movement - It's more of a standard bend/straighten movement that causes me grief. I'm also now wondering if I can do more squats without going very low to get a similar effect to fewer real, true squats. As long as it's a small movement, my knee seems okay.
I'm working on the fat loss, but I still have a LONG way to go.
I'm doing some power walking now and I'm SO glad to hear that can take inches off the butt and hips! I was hoping it would have some effect. Right now, all it feels like it is affecting are my quads and calves, which are big enough already...haha. From my cheerleading past, I have retained very strong calf muscles and well-defined quads.
This may sound silly but I have also been trying those "butt squeezes" while sitting at my desk all day. :blushing:
Checking out the YouTube link.

I would suggest Brazil Butt Lift DVDs. I did them and was happy with my results. I did not have any knee issues, in fact it helped my knees and hips. I have issues with the IT band in my right leg and had been in physical therapy for it but what helped me was the brazil butt lift program. It worked my butt and made my IT band and knee issues go away!0

Thank you for the input.
I may just try the Brazil Butt Lift. I usually know almost immediately if something will be bad for it and I like the fact that it's not a HUGE investment. If it strains my knee, I can always give it to someone else who wants to try it.
I also really liked the Tracy Anderson video alli_baba linked.0
