Really down in the dumps..

Okay, so I've been doing Tae Bo and Yoga around 5 to 6 times a week. With both combined, it's usually around an hour or more of exercise. I'm supposed to be eating 1740 calories a day, and I've been eating around 1400-1550 a day.

I thought I was doing really well. I'm not really doing strength training but I weighed myself today and I gained like 6 lbs. I'm due for my period soon but I don't know if it's possible to be retaining six lbs of water. I know I don't drink enough water a day though, and I try to when I have too much sodium. Anyway, I'm just really upset because I'm closer to where I started, and it's really bringing me down. I've been working so hard and then this happens. A plateau I can be okay with, but a gain? Ugh :(

  • is 1740 with your exercise calories or without? You might actually need to eat a little more, your body may be hungry from all the exercise. You need to drink more water. Also, how long have you been doing Tae Bo and Yoga? Maybe change it up for a couple of weeks and do some different exercises. Your body may be used to the types of exercise you are doing. Hope this helps.

Could be muscle building and TOM on top of it. Could also be the time of the day you weigh. Everyone says to weigh first thing in the morning, but I weigh my least the later at night I weigh in. How long has it been since you last weighed in before this?

    eat your calories!
    blame your period
    drink more water
    avoid the sodium

you'll be down those 6 lbs by next week

    :o)
  • 1.) Its possible to gain 6 pounds before your period/during your period in water.
2.) You need to eat more:)
3.) DO you know how many calories you are burning?

I'd put money on it being water weight! Intense exercises causes water gain for the muscles to repair themselves, and periods do as well, as does sodium & not drinking enough water. I can easily put on 5-7 lb water weight when those two combine. I once retained 9 lb of water weight! Eeeeep!

I've been doing yoga and Tae Bo for about a month. I'm planning to start 30 day shred soon as I get the video.

Plus I just bought a HRM. It's the watch kind but it is pretty much the same as what MFP tells me for my exercise.

1400 to 1500 calories seem to be pretty good. You don't have to eat all your excerise calories back. If you eat them all back you will be starting back at zero! If you are hungry eat, if not don't eat.

I never eat my exercise calories. 1740 is how much I should be eating excluding exercise calories.

Eat what is says you are suppose to be eating!! It will keep your metabolism up. Also you may be gaining muscle along with the water weight from that time of month.

Try doing different exercises for different times. Also yo yo your calories some. Your body has it's metabolism set, keept it guessing.

Try eating back some or most of your exercise calories for a week or two, see what happens! Trust me.
  • Don't beat yourself up too much. That will really hinder your progress. The weight gain could be a for a variety of reasons--including what you stated in your email. *smile*
My suggestion: pat yourself on the back for what you have accomplished so far. Then maybe review your diet/exercise plan. Look at the types of food you are eating as opposed to just the calories. And if all else fails--get another scale! LOL! That one is obviously broken.
Whatever you do, stay encouraged and don't give up.

    Take care!

eat ATleast what MFP tells you to eat (1740 or so is your base i thought i read!) not including the extra you earn from exercising, then eat back around half??? i dropped a few lbs just by eating back half my exercise cals, my body was starvin (though it didnt feel like it!!) when i wasnt eating back some of the exercise cals! and i gained 5lbs right before/during TOM and dropped it right after lol so yes, its WAY possible and way not fun!

Don't obsess!!! I do it all too much and it sucks.

Even though you're not doing weight lifting you could still have gained a bit of muscle to account for that plus combined with water weight and your upcoming period...there's many reasons for that small weight gain.

My weight varies A LOT in a few days. Heck, yesterday i think it was I was five pounds heavier than today...and that sucked because I've never weighed that much before. I'm at my heaviest right now as it is.

But the gist is not to fret too much.

I broke a 6-week plateau this week by eating a few more calories and by increasing my water intake. Chances, are the 6 pounds are water, and you need to drink water to stop retaining water. (kind of counter-intuitive, but it works!)
