Man I really suck at this. I cannot stop going over my calorie limit, and my back which needs surgery and hips hurt WAY too much to do any kind of exercise. So depressed.

try it with real easy things, like walking, it made me starting to do exercise again real easy, I was in the beginning way slower than the Walking DVDs, but now I can already keep up, just don't push yourself too hard, because it can discourage and hurt. Good luck and you can do it!!!

Try changing the type of foods you eat, try getting higher fibre and protein, these will keep you feeling full for longer.

Don't stress too much that won't help you in any way and can even halt your weight loss.

I know for me, higher fiber is super key!! And walking! Those 2 things alone help so much. Don't be discourages. As someone else said, we all have our limitations. Figuring out something that works for you is what you have to do. Whats your calorie target?

    No need to despair! =)
This is tough stuff to do. We all have physical limitations and challenges that we must all deal with. But you can do this. Back surgery and hip problems don't help in the motivation department, but it's just a matter of finding the right combination of nutrition and exercise that works best for you.

    You CAN do this =)

I have a bad back too. 3 herniated discs and other "stuff" and I find that yoga helps a lot. If you go to a reputable studio they will help you with your own limitations.

Don't give up. I have steel rods/pins in my spine AND a bulging disc in my lower spine. I had a stress fracture in my right hip last fall. So, I know all about back/hip issues.

Try doing something that doesn't put a lot of pressure on either area (walking at a pace that is comfortable will work). You may be amazed to find as you walk and build up - you'll be able to go faster or for a longer distance without pain.

Good Luck and don't let the physical side get you down.

As for your food - try and eat foods that will keep you fuller longer. Limit the processed stuff. Fruits, veggies and such. Oh and drink lotsa water. :)

If you open your diary, I'll have a look and see if I can suggest alternate foods you could replace with to stop you going over your calorie limit... I won't profess to be an expert, just a guy who struggles to eat all my calories daily with the food choices I make - with zero exercise calories to eat back.

Everyone gave great advice on the physical aspect of it. I'm offering some on the psychological aspect.

Up your calories by about 100 or 150.

Let's say you're currently trying to eat 1300, and always end up at 1400. That's really not going to make that big of a difference on the scale either way. It's like 3 ounces a week. Nothing to get upset about.

    BUT....

If you're aiming for 1300, hitting 1400, and see a big red -100 on your home page, that makes you feel like crap. If you eat the same amount, but see that you have 50 calories left, you won't feel so defeated about it.

If it's easier to stay in your goal, you'll be less likely to think, "Ah, screw it. I'm already over for the day. Might as well totally blow it... gimme a Butterfinger!"

And you might want to up it by more than 150 calories. If you're trying to lose 2 pounds a week, aim for one pound or a half pound. It's better to take more time to lose the weight and not feel depressed or deprived than burn yourself out trying to lose it all at once.
