Tracking Calories....Elpitical readings vs Polar FT7M

I have an issue. I used my new Polar FT7M to compare the stats on the eliptical as to the HMR. The eliptical says I burned 400 calories and the HRM says I burned 350. I really like the 400 better 50 calories is a difference. I just wish I new which was closer to accuracy. I'm sticking with 400 for now

Go with the Polar FT7M.0

I heard that machines are calibrated to a man's metabolism... so it's usually b/w 50-100 calories high off for a womens accurate reading.... depending on how long/intense your exercise for... a trainer at my gym told me (and my mom) that.... =(0

Sorry dude...the elliptical is only guessing based on what info you're giving it. The HRM is connected to your body and can read a changes in t=your heart rate as well as body temp, and other readings. The good news is, no matter what the real #, your exercise is still working just as hard as it ever was.0

I don't even care who it's catered to, I use the number my machine gives me. hah.0

HRM wins over machine!
everything wins over the machine's readings!0 -
For the 30 mins on elliptical, it tells me I burn 300 cals. My polar FT40 says 200. I go with the 200 since it has all my stats, vs. the elliptical, which only asks for weight.0

That explains it!! Figures.....it's supposedly a "man's world" out there in the gym, eh? :-P0 -
My HRM always reads less calories than my Elliptical. I just use my HRM because I use it for every other exercise. I don't eat back all my exercise calories anyway so even if it is off by a few calories I still get a good workout and then have the loss each week.
My advise would be to go with the HRM, because I believe it is more accurate. (Just my 2 cents)0 -
Use your HRM.. the whole reason why you(or why most people buy them) is because you(they) wanted a more accurate calorie burn and when it doesn't give the results you want, you disregard it.. and wasted all that money. Seems kinda dumb to me..
Besides it's only 50 calories.. which in the grand scheme of calorie counting, is not that big of a deal. When I do the elliptical and use my FT7 they are more like 200 calories different. and that is something to wonder about.0 -
Thank you everyone for your replies. I do agree that the HRM is more accurate.0
