your body needs time to recover in order to run optimally. I suspect that you weren't giving your body enough time to recover and that your body has enjoyed the recent down time. Now that you've given your body time to recover, don't be afraid to return to exercise...just give your body some down time during the exercise phase. aim for 3-4 intense, quality work outs each week. you don't need more than this.

I mean like I took one day off and started dropping weight, will muscle leave in that short amount of time?

No, but neither will fat. Only water leaves that quickly.

I have lost weight through diet alone and it does go, but my skin ends up saggy and I feel tired and grouchy. This time I have done it with exercise and a bit diet, and I am far healthier, and look far better.

What other people have said about muscles holding water.

I have recently made my weigh in day the morning after my day off- it seems to make a difference on the scales as the muscles in my body have had time to "drain" the water (or whatever it is they do!)
