So yesterday, I posted a topic about running in the morning. For the past week, I have gotten up with the full intention of going running...and somehow, every single morning, I ended up back in bed. Anyways, I got some great tips yesterday, so I laid out my clothes, shoes, and ipod, set my alarm, and mentally prepared myself for that morning workout. I woke up at around 2AM with rain pounding the windows and a ridiculous amount of lightning and thunder. I just shrugged it off and attempted to get back to sleep, but at 3AM, I woke up to the tornado alarm. As I shuffled down to the basement, I mentally re-planned my morning: I would attempt to catch a few winks downstairs, give myself an extra half hour of sleep, and get that darn run in if it was the last thing I did. Then, disaster struck. I started hearing this strange, high pitched beeping. I was incredibly annoyed at this point, so I just put my pillow over my head and tried to get back to sleep, only to wake up 5 minutes later with my dad yelling his head off for us to "get in the workroom, and BRING BUCKETS!!!". Apparently the beeping had been our basement alarm, telling us that the sump pump had stopped working, and in about 5 minutes, we would be completely underwater if we didn't do something about it. So the whole family banded together in the basement and bailed water out of the sump pump, all the while praying that somehow, it would start working again. 2 hours later, after several buckets of dirty water, a near puking incident (apparently the smell of rain water is rough on my brother's nose AND his stomach), and a staple stuck in someone's foot (yes, my brother, again) we all got to breathe a sigh of relief as the sump pump finally started to work again. As I trudged back upstairs to bed, I felt completely discouraged. I was exhausted, and I realized that there was no way I was getting up in an hour and hitting the treadmill. However, I had the most amazing realization as I got back into bed. Was I now breathing hard and sweating like a pig? Yes. Were my arms and back killing me from hauling buckets of water back and forth? Absolutely. And that was when I realized that maybe, in the strangest of ways, I had gotten my morning workout in after all. But I didn't stop there. I woke up and 9AM, and, instead of feeling tired, I felt strangely energized after my first morning "workout". So you know what I did? I threw on some clothes, grabbed my ipod, and hightailed it down to the basement, where my treadmill was awaiting me. As I completed my run, I was overcome with excitement at the fact that not only had the water emergency given me a great workout, it had granted me the confidence to say to myself "You know what? If I can bail dirty, disgusting rainwater out of a hole for two hours at 3AM, can I not get my butt out of bed in the morning to run?" So thank you for all of your tips and encouraging comments about my attempts at a morning run! With that and a little rainwater, I have officially conquered my morning sluggishness!

Sometimes, motivation to get ourselves in gear comes from the strangest places, but as long as it works, I'll take it! Hope your sump pump doesn't make it a habit, though!0
