Comfortable clothes are an enemy of weight loss!

After reading that obesity has almost tripled in the US since the 1960's, I was thinking some about the reasons. Most of it, I believe, has to do with portion distortion and a lack of adequate physical activity in our lives. BUT, those aren't my topics for this thread.

I was thinking back to the types of things we wore when we were growing up. We didn't have stretchy jeans; when your jeans were tight, they were really TIGHT (and super uncomfortable)! And people didn't really wear baggy sweats - not even at home. Even before my era, people wore close-fitting clothes that didn't have elastic. When you overate, you were just miserable in your clothes --- that was all there was to it.

Now I spend most of my time in really comfortable, stretchy-type things, and guess what??? I tend to overeat more because I'm not miserable in my clothes afterwards.

Anybody ever try getting the stretchy, oversized stuff out of your closet to see if it helps?

I have heard this before and been a victim of it myself, I tend to wear lululemon pants a lot and don't notice a 5 pounds gain because guess what - they are stretchy and I don't notice.
Having lose fitting clothes allows you to go up and down in weight without noticing. I have been told to wear tighter fiting things and this will help alleviate the problem.

i just did that before summer!! I threw away all my sweats so i wouldn't feel comfy wearing them, I bought some new shorts that use to fit me before I gained and thats my motivation to fit comfortable in them again, it totally works! No more sweats in public, and a better statement about yourself as well. my ex-boyfriend was really proper and British so I had to toss them:)

I definitely see the point in this! My parents balk at going out in sweats, but my friends and I see nothing wrong with it. I've had these same pair of mesh shorts for years though, and I finally had to undo the drawstring and make it tighter because they were falling off!

well I just purged about 75lbs of clothes from my house...all mine...all too big. I used to hang onto them...which I just told my husband "it was always easy to gain weight because I had bigger clothes ready that I liked" Just spent the past 2 hours pulling out everything that was too big and had him immediately take them from the house and give them away - before I changed my mind. I kept getting nervous too - and he would see it on my face and come hug me and say "its ok honey, we will buy you more clothes - clothes that fit!" So...not exactly what you were asking...but sort of along those same lines!

I think that's how I gained so much! My ex and I were homebodies and creatures of comfort. If we weren't at work, we were at home hanging out in pjs and sweats. Of course, it didn't hurt that baggy, comfy clothes hid how fat I was getting. Now when I wake up, I get dressed immediately unless I'm going to workout, in which case I get into workout clothes immediately. Clothes that actually fit are a great weight loss/maintenance motivator. You're dead on with this one!
  • Wow that's a great idea! I am the queen of elastic!

You may be onto something there . . .

One of the motivators that I had was when one of my suits was SO tight, I had to unbutton AND unzip them in the car while I drove home one night. (Good thing I was not pulled over) :blushing: Now, I have had to retire that suit -- it is way too big!

I will also have to say that I didn't really see myself getting thinner until I bought new clothes that actually fit. No sooner did I buy new pants, that people from work started noticing that I had lost weight.

I definitely think that comfortable clothing is a factor in weight gain. I gained a bunch of weight when my husband and I were dating because we spent all of our time in elastic waist band pj pants so it wasn't uncomfortable to just stuff our faces. Even now, as soon as I'm home from anywhere, I'm in stretchy clothing. I think if I was in less forgiving clothing, I would definitely not be packing in as much food.
