Am I even on track?

Okay so I try to log everything I eat even tho I go over on my calories. Well I was at a local restaurant today and was looking through the foods to find the one I was eating and it hit me that I don't know if I pick the correct one or not. The restaurant is not a chain so there is no posted information anywhere to look. And the calories I pick from the site are not the exact food I am eating. So I don't really know if the calories are to high or low or same portion size etc. So if I am wrong on my calories it would put my diary wrong and thus throw off my whole situation.

So I guess my question is how do you choose what to put on the diary when what you have isn't in the diary and the information isn't around for you to put it in the diary?

Well, from your ticker it looks like you are losing weight so you must be making the right choices. :-) When I have something out at a restaurant or at a friend's house, I just try to make a good estimation of what I ate with similar foods I find in the database and "eyeball" my portion size. For instance, if you know a portion of meat (3-4 oz) is about the size of a deck of cards and you ate a steak the size of about 2 of those, you had two portions of steak. Even the calorie count on foods are rounded up or down a bit based on rules outlined by the government so nothing is 100% accurate.

Hard one. Make your best guess on what you have learned from similar foods you have made yourself. Or if you can find a recipe that looks similar, input the information in the recipe section and see what comes out. I only frequent restaurants that I know will have the information that I need and food choices that don't make my journey difficult. (Keep It Simple)

I usually build it from scratch. If I eat at a friends house I ask what they put in it (in a non chalant way though) then build it from scratch each ingredient by guess-stimating how much of each item. It seems to work for me. I usually over estimate what I think it is. I would rather be a little over than a little under.
