Who has this and how are you losing? I could use the support of people who have this disorder as well as the backing of my family and friends!

i do! i have hashimoto's thyroiditis. i've noticed i seem to be losing slower than others do probably because of the metabolism always running slower. but it is working. i just try to workout longer and more often.

I do and I also have PCOS. I lose by eating low sodium and lots of fruits and vegetables and almost no processed foods. (I still eat some chips here and there and I eat taco shells and spaghetti noodles and pasta sauce, but that is about it for the processed food)

there is a wide range of normal and if you're having symptoms what he considers ok might not be for you. my normal is on the higher end normal and anything lower brings symptoms back. i had to fight with doc for years to get him to understand. i ended up in the hospital but was in the normal range and he finally got it.

My mom has had hypothyroid her entire life, she's always had to take meds and has always struggled with her weight. She never was able to really keep the weight off 'til she got a new doctor a few years ago who recommended going low-carb. A lot of people with thyroid issues, diabetes and hyperinsulinemia have had success with limiting carbs and making sure to eat/drink something with protein every few hours. Keeps the metabolism on an even keel without spiking & crashing all the time, and that makes it easier on your thyroid. And helps your body burn fat more constantly & efficiently. You might ask your doctor about it. Or check out

    Best of luck to you!

I am worried about this too. Thing is, I had to miss my appointment for my blood test because of a debilitating sunburn. After I heal up, I am going to get it done. This will be my first blood test since I was diagnosed with the disorder and I really hope that the possibility that I am not on an adequate dosage yet will hinder my progress. But the important thing is to not worry about, and do what I can, and listen to my body. My symptoms of fatigue are gone so that makes me happy. Just keep up with your blood work and communicate with your physician and have faith... It's really hard and frustrating. Losing weight is difficult enough without an underlying issue to mess with you!

I have hypothyroidism, and I'm having a very difficult time with weight loss at the moment. I've been overweight most of my life with the exception of about a year that I was a full-time missionary in the Philippines. What worked for me then was walking several miles each day, and eating the native foods. That included a plate full of rice, veggies and meat at every meal, very little dairy, and not much time for snacks.
As of now, I have been working out 6 days/week for about a month without losing any weight. I just started counting calories (using mfp) and I hope that helps!
I looked at some pictures of myself from after my mission earlier today. I weighed 155 lbs when I came home in 2005, and currently 255. I've got 100 lbs to lose, but I know that it is possible to look like that again!
    Good luck!

I am 27 and my body attacked my thyroid when I was In sixth grade, did not find out about it until I was in 10th grade. I have contemplated low carbs. I am going to try it for awhile. I have lost 15 since the beginning of May but am stuck at stand still weight wise. Thank you all and feel free to add me. I do the p90x lean for workouts and just watch what I eat I don't follow a meal program its to hard for me. I am also a mother of two. I have a 7 year old son and a 6 year old daughter. They give me motivation to work out cuz they do it along with me

This is me as well. I had Graves Disease, then the radioactive iodine treatment. I remember when I went to see a personal trainer after I joined a gym. When I told him that I basically didn't have a thyroid even he looked like me loosing weight was going to be a daunting task.

I was born with hypothyroidism. I had my whole thyroid removed in 2007 & am on levothyroxine. Dosage is not perfect. I'm really unsure with the whole hypo and weight thing. I had stomach problems around the time I had my thyroid out. I ate very small portions, including carbs but didnt really exercise & dropped 3 almost 4 dress sizes. This was not ideal and would not recommend it as I felt terrible. I'm finding calorie counting to be successful when done correctly. If I exercise & don't overeat I lose. It might not happen as quickly as most but it does happen!

I've noted there are a number of metabolism boosting foods i.e green tea, chilli & foods/supplements that are good for thyroid...kelp, sea vegetables. I usually have green tea and chilli on everything. I will try to use the supplements. Also remember coconut oil being suggested (a spoonful a day)...I much preferred using it on my dry skin & hair!.

Jillian Micheals also has elements of a diet based on metabolism. Might be worth looking at books on metabolism.

I think the best thing for someone with a slow thyroid is to just try and keep active. No matter how little it is.
  • I too have thyroid problems, I take levothyroxine, I can put weight on quicker than I can get it off, I think we should have our little group, especially as we seem to have different information on what the best sort of diet is, my dietician told me to eat a low gi diet, this would enable my metabolism rate to kick in faster. I do find it hard to loose weight, I did really well last year when I managed to keep off the weight I had lost then within three months I put it all on. So I started MFP last week and have lost 4lb, but thats just because its the first week, I have also stopped drinking alcohol and signed myself up for a six week gym weight loss training programme, which I will complete. I have also stopped working nights at work to give myself a little bit of stability.

I have it, I'm on the meds and have to get my blood work done soon. So far I've been doing pretty well. I eat between 1000-1200 calories a day and burn at least 500 cals 5 days a week..

Ive lost quite a bit of weight regardless of my thyroid condition. I found low carb really did work best, but its not a lifestyle I thought i could keep up with. That being said, hard work and dedication my dear friend.. the weight will come off!

I have Hypo as well (just like my mom, sister, uncle, and every woman on my mom's side). I was diagnosed almost 5 yrs ago. It took me over 3 yrs just to feel "normal" and to feel like a could function in this world again. I am currently taking 100 mcg of Levothyroxine, in fact I have been taking 100 mcg for about 4 yrs....I wonder if that will change with the weight loss. I've lost more weight here than I ever that I could lose with this disease. I suppose anything is possible!

I have it and take Levthyroxine for it. I am having my blood levels checked this week, so I'll know if that is an issue. In spite of this I have lost 14 pounds on MFP, and am going for a lot more. If you would like to friend me feel free, I probably struggloe with the same issues you do.

I have it, and I am being treated for it. I think right now my hormone levels are doing pretty well, because I am experiencing few symptoms. I can almost always tell when I need to get retested, because I start sleeping a lot and feeling generally crappy. Since my levels are good right now, I decided that this is the best time to try to lose weight. I've tried losing before, but no matter what I do, if my hormones are off, I can't lose an ounce. However, since I am feeling well, I am able to work out more and eat less and still have energy. I've only lost 3 pounds so far, but that gives me so much hope, because it's more than I've been able to lose in the past.

Hypothyroid here and I lost 18 pounds in 30 days! make sure they regulate your levels it took me 3 years and they finally found the right dosage of Synthroid and Im doing Insanity and losing I definitly reccomend some sort of HIIT like Insanity its the only way were going to get fast results with our crappy metabolisms and thyroids :(
  • I have had Hashimotos for a decade or so as well as multiple goiters and I'm a recent Thyroid Cancer SURVIVOR 2 years out...i now have no thyroid and take medication to stay level and alive...it is hard to lose weight but just takes listening to your body and trial and error to find out what works best for your body. I get blood tests now every year and go through scans and low iodine diet every 10 years to check for cancer (as long as tests come out ok), I do the best I can and have learned to just accept me as being not normal...I deal with chronic fatigue and often overdo it but I know I have to keep going and keep positive...this is my normal...I am losing weight by eating healthy foods lower carb foods lower sugar foods and exercising 3-5 times a week...I can now function somewhat normally and enjoy life and all it has to offer...I will never be stick thin due to genetics and thyroid disease but I can choose to be healthy and happy

I too have hypothyroidism got diagnosed in 2008 after crazy menstrual cycles, infertility, etc. Found out my levels were at 6.75 got referred to a primary care doctor from my OBGYN. My levels were normal recently at 1.7 but i am having bad fatigue the last week... and my weight loss isn't as much as it was in the beginning... plateau! Still loosing tons of hair but i am also vitamin D deficient and iron deficient. Makes me wonder if my levels should be checked again? I am 125 mcg of Synthroid.

I was losing weight just fine... seems like i still am mostly.. and i don't necessarily eat low sodium or low carbs.. i just watch my calorie intake and try to get some physical exercise in at least 3-4x a week! Friend me if you would like =)

I have hypothyroidism. I get the compounded medication from a nearby compound pharmacy. My levels are in the normal range as long as I take the medicine. We found the correct dosage for me within 6 months.

I don't feel like I have a harder time losing weight because of hypo. It seems to be very important to get your levels back in a good range and test at least a couple times a year to make sure you're staying there.

I don't eat low carb, but I do eat very little grains (bread, etc) due to gluten resistance. My carbs mainly come from veggies and fruit, so that may be why I'm doing well with the weight loss. I avoid flour and have corn/quinoa sparingly.

Keeping an eye on your calorie intake and being consistent on exercise really helps. I don't work out more than 30 minutes a day, typically. I just make sure to work out hard for those 30 minutes.
