Just wondered... I'm new here, have had an unsuccessful lapband surgery and am looking in to RNY. I'd love to talk to others who have had either surgery!!!

Lin in Watertown NY!

I know there are others that have had both on this site because I have seen them. I considered it but was a little leery of surgery so I thought about it (for several years actually) and during that time I talked to probably a dozen people in my small community that had it and out of all of those only one got all her weight off and kept if off for years...unfortunately I saw her about 6 months ago and she had the majority of it back on. Personally with the lack of success rate I have seen and the risks involved I wouldn't have it now even if I gained all my weight back and someone else was paying for it. When it works I think it is because the people have had extensive counseling to fix the issues that were behind the weight gain. That is just my opinion so I hope I don't offend anyone that has had it. I do understand that there are times when the person is so overweight that they have to do something more immediate.

HI there. I had gastric bypass 10 months ago. So far I have lost 147 pounds since surgery. It was a hard decision to make for sure. I thought about it for 3 years.
  • I had a lap band put on May 3 2011 and so far its doin good..not had any problems whats so ever with it..and I sure hope it stays that way..I have lost a total of 37 lbs and am very pleased with my results..I would do it all over again. I think the biggest thing it has taught me is watch my portions and what I put in my mouth..I'm human so yes I do eat things every now and then of stuff I'm not suppose to. My goal is to lose 100 pds with this lap band and yes I think I can do it.
  • I am actually planning to have a gastric bypass. I have researched bypass, duondal switch, gastric sleeve, and lap band for many years. I have a number of close friends who hae had the bypass and the lap band. Here's what i've learned. Lap band is not as successful as the others. Duondal switch has the highest risk factors. Bypass and gastric sleeve are the preferred method. Bypass is the gold standard. It is hard to have statistics because most successful gastric bypass patients do not follow up. I have 5 friends who have had gastic bypass. 1 of them put their weight back on. I have two more friends who have had it in the last 3 years who look great but its too early to tell. I was planning a lapband years ago. Due to insurance I was denied. I was in a support group and I know 15 people in that group and stayed in touch with them. Two of them were successful, the rest failed. My Uncle and one of my best friends had lapband. My Uncle failed, my friend lost a lot of weight and put about half back on. It's been 8 years for her, she got it when it first came out and had to go in for them to swap it out with a 'safer' band that was new.

Here's my recommendation. Do your own research. Go to support groups. Don't laugh but Weight Loss Surgery for Dummies is an amazing book. You can get it at Amazon.com. It's also available as an e-book. OR check out this link: http://www.pacificbariatric.com/
They give great information there. This is why I have chosen this facility to do my surgery. I've researched for years and these are they docs for me. Good luck to you.
