re-losing the lost weight

I'm trying again.
10 years ago I lost 40 pounds. after reaching my goal, I was able to eat freely and maintain within 5 - 10 pounds. I have always yo yo'd in that range, so I didn't stress over it.
2 years ago this month I had a total thyroidectomy. I was at 140 the day I went in for surgery. today I weight in at 174.3 ... and up until a few months ago, nothing but the removal of my thyroid had changed.
earlier this year I went to my doctor to see what could be causing this weight gain (and the difficulty in losing it). we also discussed my lack of energy and she reminded me that I am "approaching 40 and weight is more difficult to lose at this point". I know this is a load of bull, but whatever. I was given a full run of tests and found that my TSH was way out of whack, my cholesterol was oddly out of whack as well (but the two go hand in had, I found out).
so, while my meds are toyed with and my energy continues to plummet, I have stopped walking, stop any working out, and oddly my weight has maintained.
I decided this week that I am done waiting for the perfect levels to be found. I'm taking back the control and going back to what worked 10 years ago ... counting calories and, while not following a specific plan, focusing on a higher protein diet.
back then I had a great support group on AOL message boards. they kept me motivated and helped me thru plateaus. I'm hoping to find a new support group here
TIA

Welcome! Just want you to know that your not alone. I'm 26 and found out about a year ago I had thyroid cancer. They removed my thyroid back in feb. but my medicine is still out of wack! After surgery I gained about 30 pounds and it is so hard to lose it when you feel tired all the time. I don't even have the energy to keep up with my two little kids so I am trying my hardest to lose this weight and get my energy back. Good Luck with everything!!!0

thank you amberray!
glad to hear they found your cancer and got to it. my tumor was originally diagnosed cancer, then 4 days later, after the final pathology, my doctor called to tell me it was all a fluke. my mom had thyroid cancer when she was 35 so we'd already known what to expect, but it was good news to hear.
looks like you are well on your way to losing - good for you! hope your meds are evened out soon - I go in for my TSH test tomorrow morning ... after 3 adjustments, I'm about done with the whole thing! lol0
